This is my first post and I want to thank everyone for all the great information I have found.  I ride an 2000 Tourer.  I recently experienced the dreaded hyrdro lock and busted the idler gear.  I have the engine pulled from the bike and the repairs are going fine.  My question is should I do any work on the clutch while I have the engine out of the bike.  It currently has 89k miles on it.  The last 20k are from me and I dont know if the PO ever did any work on the clutch.  The slave cylinder looked like it was full of brown sugar so I plan on rebuilding it.  I am not having any issues with the clutch I just dont want to go to all this trouble to pull the engine and have to do it again in another 6 months.

Also, anything else I should do while I have the engine out such as oil seals, bearings etc.?  I have already de-smoged it.

u don't have to pull the engine to replace the clutch. only the GL1200 requires engine removal. do not know about the GL1800 bikes.

slave cylinder most likely just needs to be cleaned and flushed, parts should be good to go. can be rebuilt with engine in bike in the future.
clutches are known to last 200-300k sometimes more.
only issue for some yrs is the dampner plate goes bad. mine did at 42k miles.
a search will bring up much.
IMHO, since u have the engine out replace the dampner plate and that's it.

+1 on the damper plate. Although "most" clutches are failsafe, there are more and more reports of them going out. I just changed mine out in June with 81k miles on it at the time. It had a failed damper plate. If you change out the damper plate, you should be fine.

I have a '98 with the faulty rivet issue. Currently have 151K with the original clutch. I guess not all of them go bad. However: if yours is apart, replace it.

I have a 99 Interstate with just under 92k, and I just paid to have the clutch replaced. If your slave looks like brown sugar water, then the PO probably did very little if any routine maintenance, so my gut would tell me to swap out the dampner plate and clutches while you have it apart. It's a few hundred dollars and very little time involved i doing it. Just my .02 worth.

I can assure u your clutch plates would have been in spec, unless it was extremely severely abused. the OEM disk material is the best out there. when I did mine a brought a spare GW GL1500 clutch basket w/120k miles for like $40 to help in assembly. I mic'd the disk plates and they were all within spec.
GW riders with the added weight and pulling a trailer get 200-300k miles from a clutch. just go to the GW message boards.

I agree with clutch replacement it would be cheap insurance. I would also change the shift seal.
