99 Standard w/80K.  Clutch lever is only about one and a half inches from the grip.  No problem shifting but the bike wants to go forward slightly when in first gear and the lever fully pulled.  Any advice sure would be appreciated.

Sounds like you're either low on clutch fluid or have air in the system

Agreed. When is the last time you checked or changed the fluid, OP?

What does that mean, the clutch lever is 1.5 inch from the bars ?  Are you talking when the bike is at rest ?
If so, I'd recommend taking a good look at where the lever mounts to the cylinder.  Removal to take better look may be needed to look at the lever, bushing and push rod.

These clutches don't have much free-play, they pretty much engage/disengage at the end of travel.

If the clutch lever doesn't come all the way back I'm Afraid you've got rivets sheared in the clutch pack.  But i would bleed the system and give it a go.

first pull that slave cylinder apart and clean, then new DOT 4 fluid.

still a problem then most likely damper plate rivets. just did mine a few months ago, search my post, many links to other members posts who did change out.

I have to ask the obvious......do you have the adjustable clutch lever (with the round numbered dial) and it just needs to be adjusted????

Yes, this should fix the problem.  Have had this happen a few times when going for my first ride of the year.  Bled clutch and all was good.

Thanks a lot for all the considerate replies.  Ashamed to say the fluid has never been changed.  Will give that a try.

From now on, every 1 to 2 years; same for the brake fluid. You don't want to find the kind of jelly in your reservoirs that I found in mine.
