Well, I dove into a desmog this afternoon.  I have to admit, it is a little more involved than I first thought!  With the headers on, those allen head bolts are a pain in the tail pipe to get out.  I've got everything between the frame finished and the left side and #6 finished.  I will finish the last 2 and install a Dan-Marc valve.  I just need a to get a fuel hose and some wire for that install.  Also considered checking/ adjusting the valves while I have it down.  Now that I've got it taken apart they have changed the weather forecast and tomorrow would be good riding weather.... Maybe I can get some nice days between Christmas and New Years to take it out for a test spin.

I dropped the left side exhaust when I did my de-smog a few weeks ago.  Getting those allen screws back in is no picnic either.  I have since purchased a long ball end allen wrench that can be used on the carb intakes as well.  I think is it 5mm.  (Lots of 5mm screws on the beastie.)  Would have made reinstalling those bolts much easier.  Some guys leave that little unit intact when de-smogging and simply cut off the tube going to it, bend it over and crimp and then dab a little JB Weld on the cut end to prevent any air going thru.  I chose to remove and replace with a blank cover as shown in the Shop Talk page.  I used new gaskets I had purchased ahead of time.

Lots of discussion about reinstalling the air box.  I tied the tubes together with zip ties and pulled them in toward the center which made it easy to work into position, then simply cut the zips and rubber tubes sprung into position over the carbs.  Very easy to do.  Do make sure you have a small inspection mirror (dentists mirror) though to look behind.  One of my boots was kinked from an earlier removal, and would not go on without a little persuasion.  There is a nice video by a guy named Dag showing how to replace the airbox.  search for it if this is something you need help with.

I'm in need of help. I'm ready to reinstall my air box and there is a hose about 12-14" long attached to the back left corner of it and I can't seem to figure out where it is supposed to hook onto. Help please!?

Edit: Found it. Instead of being a solo drain, it tees into another drain hose

Thought it was the drain/vent hose. It ends just off that T also.

Gets rid of a myriad of vacuum hoses, thereby almost totally negating the possibility of a vac. leak down the road. Those hoses get hard after years in place and eventually crack, especially where they mount on the back side of the carb intake runners. It doesn't create any extra HP or increased performance. It does create piece of mind, knowing you're not going to be plagued with hard to find vacuum leaks when unexpected.  cooldude
