I bought my valkyrie not to long ago, and i have never even driven the 1800 yet. (Come on spring). I did have a nice 1999 1500. Anyway, I am wondering what options people have used to pack for a trip? I don't want bags or backrest or luggage rack, as I want to put all my cash towards my bike. Then maybe in a couple years get some nice accessories. Anyway, I started looking at tail bags, and they look descent. Does anyone have one of the jumbo tail bags, and can let me know their thoughts? Or just use a backpack and strap to the passenger seat? I will be traveling solo, so I like the idea of just strapping something on back, but I would like it to hold what I need for a long weekend getaway, possibly longer. I plan on packing light, but a person needs rain suit and etc...

Keep the weight of any added bag as low as possible to reduce the effect on center of gravity and the effect of wind loading.

Keeping the weight and profile low will reduce any negative effect on handling and ride quality.

Grin I just ordered the 12 liter cortech magnetic tank bag. I will fit my needs on short commutes and easy on and off with rain cover and backpack straps. I don't have a passenger seat as I installed the eliminator seat kit

This is the setup I use, lots of storage.

I have used a tank bag with the tail bag for day rides. However, with the soft paint you get rub marks using a tank bag, no matter how careful.

I have a hard case I'm building mounting brackets for, should be done soon.
I'll post a pic when it's finished if you want.

Here is how I did it on a VTX R ...

The carry on bag is on a rack, the saddles are on easy brackets. 2 days, 700 miles, no problms.

When I got my 2014 Valkyrie Honda had a deal going to get $1000.00 acces free, so i got the Honda bags and wind shield, had to find an after market taller 18" shield and made it work. did get the Honda sissy bar and pad made my own luggage rack out of 1-1/2" alum. angle, added hwy pegs, latest last year bought a Viking hard trunk, again made my own brackets to mount it right behind my so i can use it as a back rest on longer trips, can take it on, or off, in like 10 min. now I dont have to bunggie anything, except if I take my soft cooler on the luggage rack, for those cool one on the road. Now I can pack enough for a several week trip, including cooler weather gear and rain suit, with only a few stops at the laundry-mart to freshen up. usually dont wear a helmet,so it goes in the trunk when not required by law. I look forward to the next future Dragon round-up, some where in the more central states west of the big Mississippi, went to last years in southern Indiana, that was a blast. Till the "ride on life is good"

I just installed a Leather Lyke locking trunk with backrest. The trunk is mounted on the oem luggage carrier with oem luggage mounts. I did have to trim 1/4 inch of either end of one aluminum  bracket supplied by LL due to the rack being tapered, I also had to drill a couple of the mounting holes in the trunk a bit bigger (.277 I think) and one of the holes in each of the aluminum brackets and they supplied 1/4-20 carriage bolts so I swapped them for socket head cap screws 1 1/4 long.  I'll post a pic later.

Sorry it took me a few days to get to this but here you go, pics and instruction for easiest install of a LeatherLyke locking trunk with back rest.

I replaced the supplied 1/4-20 Carriage bolts with 1/4-20 socket head cap screws and washers, this is because there is no place for the square on the Carriage bolt to locate. Also I'm a machinest so the quality of the hole placement annoys me being as they use 1/4 inch bolts and drilled all the holes 1/4 dia but they dont quite match up.

First install the OEM Rear carrier attachment kit and the Rear carrier. I wont post instructions to do it but you can find them on Honda's site.

Next were going to open up the holes in both of the brackets and the holes were going to use to mount with to .277 or a letter J size drill. Also we need to trim off about 1/4 inch off either end of one bracket, this is because the rear carrier tapers a bit and the welded on studs get in the way..

Here I put the bolts into the holes and placed it on top of the rest, notice the front (further away) bolts don't quite sit straight, I guess depending on your luck you may need to deal with that as when I originally mounted the trunk I used the other 4 holes and it worked fine but it sat too far back for the Lady so I'm mounting it further forward, anyway we will fix that in a sec.

Go ahead and add the trimmed bracket then the lock washer and nut (I'm tempted to swap in a self locking nut.) tightening them just enough that you can still adjust the trunk.

Once in place I used a 1/4" endmill and a power drill to open both of the other holes in the trunk and to open up one hole in the bracket so they are more of a short slot.

Add the other bracket, washers and nuts and tighten them all securely.

Here is the finished product except this is when I had it installed on the other holes so it will sit 2-3" further forward.

Hope this helps. Later this year when I finish paying the bike off or early next year when my taxes come back I will look into possibly installing LeatherLyke hard locking saddle bags, they just dont have a set for our bikes so i will need to see how to get them to mount using OEM stays. I may need to make an adapter.

Looks fine if you like having it so far back, maybe because you ride 2up.  I mounted mine close behind the riders seat cause I only have it on for extended trips. That way I can lean on it myself. I take it off and only have the bags for day trips or ridding 2up. I made my own carrier out of 1/12 alum angle, for those extra long trips or if I want to take my tent and sleeping gag.    Looking forward to several trips this summer. Ride on life is good.

I've never wanted/needed a back rest myself plus my corbin seat just came in so if I ever do want one I can order theirs. If you don't use oem bags what bags do you use and how did you mount them? I'm thinking of a set of LeatherLyke if they will make them for us. I have a email in but they haven't responded yet.

Rogueleader_92,

With the tour pack mounted so far back, do you think the Corbin hard bags would open with out hitting it?

The Givi tour pack I have is so far forward that the hard side bag top hits immediately when you open it.

By the way I'm moving to Park City in July. I'm building a home over looking the Jordanelle Reservoir.

I don't know if Corbins bags will fit/open, a good way to guess would be how far apart the inside edges of the lids are when opening, if they don't get closer then 17 inches they might, 19 for sure they should.

If you want to hold on till you get here we could meet up and look at it together. Just drop me a PM sometime.

Again, I'm looking into possibly mounting LeatherLyke bags next year. The Corbins don't fit with the passenger floor boards plus I don't have 2k to drop on Corbins.

P.S. here are a few more closer shots of where it is located after I moved it, plus it has the Corbin Dual Tour seat now for comparison.
