looking at a longer than usual IB ride, concerns

carb tubing.  bike is 14 years old and so I get concerned about all the rubber tubing.  is there a size replacement?  how about "dead end plug"? clamps

should I get those "off road" lights for driving/ fog lamps?  or will I get stopped in other states....recommendations for legal lights?

also I have taken off the air box and noted that the "glue" around the air supply to the carbs is fractured lose, etc.  is that really an issue?  should I clean and replace with silicone?

how many/what fuses?

I think I should bring at least on of each bulb for headlight, brake and signal.....?

any other suggestions from this knowledgeable group would be greatly appreciated

as for the tubing, 5/16 will work. the tubing on there oem is 8mm i just did the desmog and got rid of it all but the on from #6 intake to my fuel valve. the glue you are talking about is on the underside of the airbox? if so it is no trouble. the rubber intake air pickups through the box fit tight and no leaks. mine where like that. on the extra lights i have none but have seen some other I/S with the small retangle types just under the headlights. as long as they are legal driving lights i figure you should be ok, the fuses you can get a assortment pack at walmart and keep in the trunk. the only one i would make sure you have a spar for is the main fuse ( the metal strip one ) the turn signal bulbs can be gotten at walmart so no big thing there if one goes out on you during the trip. headlight bulb? if you are still running OEM bulds yes get one and keep it with you, if you have done the Mod like me then you can get it at any auto store or walmart if one goes out on the trip. also looks at jeffs page in shop talk for items that can be replaced with common parts from auto stores.

is the headlight mod the one where you break off the tab and use a tabbed shim?

most of the places I have looked (even from some folks links here) say off road only in the fine print.  anyone have links for "valid driving/fog lights"?

On my I/S I just cut off the tab-NO shim. Been dat way fer a LOT of miles and no/none/nada/zero aiming issues. RIDE SAFE.

Here a link to the shims

http://wingstuff.com/products/33593-h4-headlight-bulb-shims-for-gl1500?context=electrical_connection

I rode without shims for years and though my lights were aimed OK until I bought and installed the shims.  Now I realize that they were aimed up a little and I can see better at night with the shims.

Don't you mean 5/32", 4mm?

The vacuum tubing is 3.5mm but 5/32" can be substituted.

Yes 5/32 is correct on the size. Fingers and small key pad on phone makes for bad typing

+1 on the aux lights.
And wired/fused separately from the main headlight.

I ride 40-50k/year on a few bikes, and have aux LEDs on all of them.  Three times in the last 5 years I have lost either headlight bulb, or a lighting fuse while travelling away from home.  Having a separate lighting source will keep you moving.

Once was on the AZ 191, at night in a frickin rainstorm; that was not a good day.  Without the LED's I would have been stuck up there overnight...

If you want the best, check out the Clearwater LEDs.  As much light as your credit card will allow, and they are dimmable via a rotary knob to whatever level you want.

Just a comment on the separate wiring. I have mine fed by separate circuit, with a switch that can turn the fogs/drivers on and off...but only if the headlight is on. That is really handy if you come round a corner and there is traffic there suddenly, and where I am I am pretty sure is law. But then you could have a switch that comes from the separate power lead,  bypasses the headlight part and allows the fogs on their own by connecting the relay directly.

Having said that if you lose high beam you still have low. You may have to ride slower, but.....
