thinking about getting rid of the obnoxious air box and going with individual carb filters.  Any thoughts on this and is it worth trying?

Don't do it. Every attempt to modify the airbox has caused the owner to go back to stock.

I dont want to replace the pods, just want to watch a video on how to take the pods off... I want to paint the plastic guard over the filter red to match other accents that I have painted on the bike...... doesnt look to be hard to do,just want to make sure that nothing comes up to break something.  I supose I could just look at the parts blow up and check it out that way   Cant wait for warmer weather so we can start riding again   RIDE SAFE  LIFE IS GOOD

I think you are speaking of something on the 1800? And OP is talking about a 1500.

will require major tuning and re-jetting. I don't think there is room for individual filters due tot he frame. people before have turn the carbs outward for single filters.

stock air box CAN be modified if one also tunes and re-jets for the change.
I have over 20k on my modded air box and intake tubes. much better avg mpg.

I am with 98valk. Unless you have plenty of time, patience and love pulling the carbs off repeatedly to get the jetting right don't do it.
I too have a well modified airbox and it took a lot of time to sort the jetting out.

I'd be interested in detail on that if you'd be so kind......With a triked Valk, I am getting 2-3mpg less, I would imagine, already. I am looking to build a higher flow exhaust as well, so if I mod the box I can start rejetting and experimenting for two birds with one stone, to mix a metaphor or two Cheesy

thanks for all of the responses.  I have had a lot of trouble getting all of the vacuum leaks taken care off.  wow big surprise (vacuum leak on a valkyrie).  i have all the stuff that I need to do the desmog but havent done it yet.  i figured if I was going to be in there would give that a shot.  sounds like its a no go.  guess I will just have to put new rtv around the airbox tubes for about the hundredth time.  its all gravy though, in the end its still a valkyrie to ride right.

Nurries mate and look forward to the lesson. We have been occupied anyway, entertaining guests. Sounds slack and bohemian, but for me it's tough! Sad

I have never pulled the carbs to rejet.  for me, (I wear large size gloves), I can raise one side up enough to use a small 90 degree ratchet screw driver.  much easier after I de-smogged. the right side tried my patience the first two times before de-smogged.

Having pulled the carbs numerous times I can have them off quick so it is just as easy to pull tem and work on the bench.
Each to their own and what works best for you.
