Hey guys,
I recently bought a chrome dipstick off ebay for the Valk to replace the black plastic one.  It was advertised as "Show Chrome" brand I think.  It was from some guy parting out a bike, not an actual online store.
When I switched them out I just happened to hold them side by side and noticed that the chrome one was probably 1/8 to 1/4 inch longer than the stock one.  This made me think that perhaps the oil level readings would be inaccurate as a result.
Thoughts...?
Does anyone have experience with the Show Chrome dipsticks?
I would post pics but it's late.  I'll update with pics tomorrow.

I checked my oil with the old dipstick and made sure it was correct amount on the bike.
Then cut the new dipstick same length as the old one , dipped it in and made a mark on it where I saw the oil was. Smiley

Some of the after market ones are adjustable.  Look for a set screw near the threads.

Have the same one...same as Relax, marked the level indicater on the new dipstick to match the OEM.  Kept the OEM one handy for a while and the next oil change or two just so I could double check.

Same deal with the Tel Tru oil temp dipsticks.  The level lines are close (OEM and Tel Tru), but not identical.

I kept my OE dips and only check oil level with them.

I though about scribing the Tel Tru's, but after never losing a drop of oil in 10 years over multiple changes, I didn't bother.

I put in a gallon at oil changes, and 6-8K later, a gallon comes out (some in the filter), every time.

When I picked up my Valk, the PO had the original dipstick in a box with other parts; I compared it with the chrome one, and noticed the extra length, and he said is was longer so you didn't have to stand the bike up to check the oil. Wrong (he may have been trolling me). I just took a small file and marked the true levels on the chrome stick.

Here's the pic:

After taking the side by side picture, I noticed that yeah the previous owner had in fact filed some lines that match up with the stock dipstick.  I guess that's that.  Thanks guys!

Thank's for the tip Wayn-o. I have the same one & never noticed it. I checked mine with the OEM & sure enough it's longer.  I'm sure it has to make some kind of difference.

It begs the question. Can ones dipstick ever really be too long ?  Smiley

Clearly, that depends upon the particular crankcase you're sticking it in.   Roll Eyes

(And if you refer to it as a crankcase (out loud), remember to duck.)

I have one and was disappointed that it was not marked correctly. I also cut mine and remarked it. The only thing I don't like about the chrome dipstick is it gets very hot to the touch, the original one did not.

Mine got marked in the same manner when I got it. No big deal.

A bit of advice....the well where the dipstick resides is a good collector of debris. You'd do well to clean out the sand, grit, etc., before removing the dipstick.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.
