I show the gear indicator operation on my 98 valk.
I've seen posts by other members who have the 1st gen model that VRCC member Joop Angelier built a while ago. This 2nd gen unit works a little differently: it reads the engine pulse from the tach signal in the headlight case (if I remember correctly) and has another sensor at the front wheel to read the RPM. I've been riding with it for a couple months now, and find it pretty useful.

I might also do an install video if there's any interest. Let me know here, or comment on the video.

there is a gear sensor for the gl1500 goldwing that actually tells you what gear you are in from the mechanically position of the transmission.

i dont mean to be mean. but i dont find this useful.. its looks cool and everything but aint useful at all. when you come to a stop. i have started on second gear thinking i was on first. i see no use on it if it tells you you are in neutral no matter what gear you are when you are in a stop.

To me it would all be about cost.

Here is my post in the GW gear indicator.

Hey brother, I got no reason to think you're being mean for expressing your opinion. Plus, I'm not trying to convince anyone else, just showing what I did to my ride... for anyone who's interested in modding.

Personally, I wasn't sure how useful I would find it either. But after 2 months of riding with it, I was surprised with how useful it seems. One more piece of data when I'm pushing my bike turns out to be really useful. A quick glance down to see whether I'm in 4th or 5th gear at 77mph is worth it. Plus, as I'm approaching a light, I can quickly see if I'm in 2nd or 1st before coming to a stop. That's what's really nice!
Of course, I could've gotten an Interstate (that has all these gauges built in) for the same price when I bought my bike. but I consciously chose a standard with the idea that I could mod it as a hobby.

Interesting. If I'd known about that when I did my hydrolock repair, I might've looked into it.
This install can be done in about 15-20 minutes, and only involves opening the headlight case and plugging in some wires, then bolting on a sensor at the front wheel.
An easy mod for the functionality it provides, even though it's not the same as an OEM mechanical solution.
