I'm sure this was asked before but here goes. I read a long time ago on this site that as long as there was no marking on the bottom of the round tag in back of synthetic oil jug it could be used in the bike. Is this still true or did they change something. The reason I ask is, normally I would use rotella oil but at the price they want $48.00 a jug is crazy . They have other synthetic oils that have nothing written on the bottom of the round tag, will this work or should I dish out the 50 bucks.

New PC-11 diesel oil specification is coming, search engine it. last I read should be on shelves end of 2016. will provide much greater wear protection while allowing 5w-30 and 10w30 for better mpg to replace 15w40 oils. I have used 10w30 diesel oil in bike, did used oil analysis after 8k miles after 2 yrs could have went 10k miles. I've posted results before. I feel sorry for the 3k mile cheap insurance synthetic oil changers. If I could have their oil and filters I never have to buy oil and filters ever again.

I was worried, so just looked. Walmart price as of right now, on their website, shows $21.36
Get a larger oil filter than OEM, and use the whole 4 qts in the bike.

According to my oil changes, stock sized oil filter putting in a full 4 qts. is 4 ounces overfilled past full. Probably doesn't matter though on our bikes since not too fussy. I'm sticking to that since they all say overfilling is worse than being slightly below the full mark. I've seen in the blue jug 5w-30 rotella t6 at walmart for 20 bucks and every now and again at farm and fleet on sale for 20 bucks with a 5 dollar mail in rebate as well. I use Amsoil 10w-40 though and is not cheap at 10.50 per qt.

That's good for you guys in the US, you can get Rotella cheap. Out here in Montreal Canada they sell that oil for $47.99 plus tax, big differencein price. We always get screwd in the price of oil and gas and averything else.

any diesel oil will do the job. The Honda engines spec their dino oil which many oil analysis have shown not to be a top of the line oil, for 8k miles oil change and they warrantee the GL1500s and Valkyries for 7 yrs. Would they do that if the engine would wear out using their oil and the 8k change? These engines do not wear out. Really no need for rotella 5w40 unless u want to do extended drain intervals 10k+ miles using oil analysis. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/forums/22/1/Heavy_Duty_Engine_Oil_(HDEO)_-http://www.pqiamerica.com/June%202014/consolidated%20HDEO%202015.html

I think I see it for a lot less in the 5 gal pail at Princess Auto, like maybe $75?? But not having a house to store all the extra at, I just drive south 1/2 hr, buy cheap gas, some cheese, and get a few gals of oil for all my vehicles for the year. Makes a nice little annual trip of a 1/2 day.

I'm in Toronto and I get stuck for the same thing. $48 for a jug of Rotella 5 L. But it is MA rated so it is good for your motorcycle. I have used it in every bike and never have an issue. Go 8-10k between oil changes.

I have been using Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel 5-40 in both my bikes for some years now. Change every 8K miles and everything runs smooth and quiet. I know that there are other good oils on the market, but that is my pick. These engines seem to do well on a variety of oils and filters. To me, the most important thing in engine longivity is to use a good oil and change it and the filter regularly...Jim

Jim, does that have any kind of friction modifiers in it? I don't have very high mileage on the last change but it's over a year old and I really should think about doing it before long. I'm looking for something a bit less expensive than Amsoil but still good for the bike. What you listed above....is that specifically what I should look for by name, weight, etc.?

John, no diesel oil that I know of contains friction modifiers. Not being an oil expert, I can't say this with 100% certainty, but Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel does not contain any. Walmart usuall has a few gallons at about $25 ea...Jim

Just changed my oil this morning. Used Rotella T6, 5-40 Synthetic Oil and a Purolator Pure One PL14610 filter. Oil cost $15.00 with a $5.00 rebate from Shell. The filter cost $5.79. Purchased both oil and filter from local Meijer's Department Store.

I also use the Rotella t6 in the blue jug 5w-40 for my Can Am ATV's vs. spending 15 bucks per qt. for Can Am branded oil at the stealership. Others use it as well so must be good right??
I would think though that unless in colder states 5w would be not as good as recommended 10w oil?? 10w-40 is recommended vs. 5w-40 but some use 15w-40 which in hotter states that don't drop much below 50 all year long, would be fine as well using 15w oil.
I sometimes think pouring in near 11 dollar qts. of Amsoil 10w-40 being 44 bucks is it really worth it for say 4-5K miles per riding season? Then again, is ONLY one oil change per year on the cycle and the Valk is worth it right. I do notice in the spring my Valk shifts better and gets less stuck in neutral with fresh oil change vs. say in late October getting stuck in neutral happens more so with not as fresh of oil, coincidence or not?????????????

I read many years back that using a synthetic oil might affect the clutch operation. I've been running conventional oil (Valvoline 10W40) for 16 years and have 115K miles on the bike. I've got the original clutch too. Changed oil every 5K miles. Am I missing something?

Sunthetic will only affect the clutch if it has friction modifiers in it is the way I understand things. I have used synthetic for many years no issues.
