Timing belts - break-in period?
«
on:

Just had the timing belts and tensioners replaced, and noticed a definite "raspy" sort of sound when accelerating and shifting in 3rd & 4th gear primarilly (aftermarket exhaust, so difficult to hear at higher revs) that was not there previously. Is there a break-in period for belts and tensioners where they could be a bit noisy at first? Appreciate any input...thx.

Had that noise after belt replacements on a Goldwing. Found that the belts were overtightened. As far as I know there is no break in period for timing belts.

There's no break-in period, but as the previous poster said, they most likely are over-tightened.

Yeah, that's a drag that the shop didn't know how to set the belts tension. I did mine last year and just let the spring of the idler pulley set the belt tension for me. You could probably get in there and do that on yours, unless you want to bring it back to the shop--but can you trust them? You shouldn't hear much of anything, especially at higher RPMs. My belts (even the ones on there before I changed mine out) make a little noise but it's at idle speed and I wouldn't call it "raspy."
