What's a good source other than Loves Truck Stop(too far away)? I have some in my "stash" but not enough for a c/t. I've heard Walmart carries something similar but thinking it might be for an air gun. Anybody have experience with them, or another type?

I use them on all my bikes. I get them from eBay. I use about 3oz in the back and 2oz in the front. I don't use imitation glass or plastic air soft B/B. I never had any issues with Dyna Beeds. You just can't mix them with stop leak or any other form of tire fix a flat.

I just ordered a four pack kit(12oz. total) off Amazon, $25.96 w/free shipping. Should be here midweek, just about the time I'll be putting the bike back together. The 12oz. should give me enough to last the rest of my biking years. Dennis, aren't those BB's too large to fit through the valve stem?

Sorry John, you posted before I could find this. You can get them in five pound jars here. $60 plus shipping. Got mine! Thanks to BonS for this find. "The following is from an email I received from Quackenbush Co. I talked and ordered from Tom Weiss.
The beads they are buying are our QBZ-58A, which is made of zirconium silicate. ZY beads are made of yttrium stabilized zirconia, and they cost a lot more. We can offer our 0.8-1.0 mm QBZ-58A for the price of $60.00 per quart. A quart contains a little over 5 lbs. We have the beads (QZ-58A) in stock.
Quackenbush Co., Inc. Tom Weiss 6711 Sands Road Crystal Lake, IL 60014 (USA) Website: www.quackco.com Ph: 815-479-8900 Fx: 815-479-8890 ----- Original Message ----- From: Bon Shaw To: quackco@mc.net Sent: Tuesday, July 21, 2009 8:28 AM Subject: 0.8-1.0 ZY beads I have about three pounds of dynabeads left over. I ordered a quart from the "real" dynabead inventor. "innovative balancing" was a client to "Quackenbush Co" who was the original inventor. I was able to purchase a 2 quarts (just shy of 10lbs for 130.00 dollars.). I still have about three pounds left. The guy at innovative balancing is rude and arrogant, overpriced in my opinion. And when I called Quakenbush I left a message and Tom called me back and I learned the entire history of how dynabeads were thought up and made. It was a great conversation and a good ma and pop business is how it started. Don't waist your time on spending 13 bucks on 6oz when you can buy a quart (5lbs.) for $60 and will last for a really long time. I bought the 5lbs back in 2010, and have hardly touch the jar.

Dyna Bead offered them in a bag. You break the bag open, and throw the whole thing in. After you start driving, the spinning will free the beads, and the bag just spins around inside also.
When you remove the tire, break the bead, you vacuum them up with a panty hose on the end of the vacuum hose, and reuse the beads. You can do this all in the horizontal position.

I have put the beads in through the valve stem, but it is a real pain with a lot of tapping with a rubber mallet and fiddling. I mount my tires myself, both bike and car and have figured out that the easiest way for me is to pour them right into the tire while one bead is still broken loose. I only use ceramic beads, they are heavy and will always go to the lowest point whatever orientation the tire and wheel are in. I use a funnel with a piece of clear tubing on it to install the beads.

Ross, thanks for the offer, I went ahead and ordered some online, figured they'd get here about the time I'm ready for them. Found I have other work/cleanup to do anyway.

I just got an email today, the company is out of business, as the owners retired. You can read it below. Quackenbush in Crystal Lake, IL. has recently sold their company and the owners have retired. Tom Quackenbush has passed along your previous order history to Ceroglass. I just wanted to pass along my information in case you have any future needs. My contact information is below. Please do not hesitate to give me a call if you have any needs for any type of ceramic and glass beads. I have listed below the different types that we stock in our Tennessee facility. Sintered Zirconium Silicate Fused Zirconium Silicate Cerium Stabilized Zirconium Oxide Yttrium Stabilized Zirconium Oxide Glass Beads We stock over a million pounds of media in our Tennessee facility. We can ship one pound or a truck load. The material you received from Quackenbush will be the same exact material yu will receive from Ceroglass. Please let me know if yu have any questions. It took longer than expected for the Amazon shipment to get here so I checked with O'Reilly Auto Parts. Ordered them midday, picked them up after 5:00pm same day, came from their local warehouse. I found most auto parts places around here carry them but you might have to wait a day since they usually don't have them as shelf stock.

One other point of interest when I use BBs. The BBs do NOT have any fine particles that plug the tire valve when checking tire pressure. I plan on doing all 4 corners on my new to me 06 Pontiac-BBs as the balance media. I'll check with Ross and find out whether or not he knows bout Q bush goin outa business there in Crystal Lake. RIDE SAFE.

It may be worth noting that I have had balancing media stick in my valve stems causing a leak even after making sure the valve stem is at least at 90 degress and being tapped on. I now never check my tire pressure unless sitting at an air pump.
I do like the idea of BB's so they don't get plugged in the valve stems but alas you can't put them in through the valve stems. I suspect most of us choose a balancing method during tire changes though and after that forget about it.

Any reason to NOT use the Crosman ASP512 AirSoft BBs (.12G 6mm, Red BBs)? If they will work, how much should I put in the rear (CT going on) and front?

Airsoft ammo available at any Wally World . Cheap postal ( pot ) scales available at any Indian owned quickie market ( not the native American Indian the other kind ) . 2 oz motorcycle tire / 3 oz car tire . Been using them for years so has all my local riding buds.

Another email, inquiring if I wanted to make a purchase.
Note: In the past, you purchased our 0.8 mm zirconium beads (QBZ-58A) through Quackenbush. When Tom retired a couple years back, he shared your information with us.
I just wanted to check in to see how your bead supply for your MC tires is holding up and see if you were ready to re-order. Our product name for these beads is ZS-9309. These are in stock. Price is $9/lb. plus shipping from Columbia, TN. We would be happy to check shipping charges – would just need to know the quantity you are interested in. You purchased a quart in the past (5.18 lbs.) – we would round this down to 5 lbs. - $45 plus shipping.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. We are always happy to help.
Thanks so much, Gordon. Have an awesome weekend, and Happy Halloween!
Very Best,

Anybody ever use balance beads in a low profile car tire used on a 4-wheeler. My SUV apparently has a wheel they can't seen to balance right and still has a vibration at speed. I was told some time back that beads don't work well with low profile tires which mine also happen to have the pressure monitoring system.

Six shotgun shells, one ounce each of #7 steel shot, three in the front, three in the back. Pour down the valve stem.....check first to see if the valve stem is large enough diameter. Use a small diameter plastic hose with a funnel small enough to cause the shot to run down the tube in single file. Tilt the valve stem up to facilitate the shot going down the valve stem...... Can't believe I wasted so much time balancing tires with weights......

ITA with a 90 degree valve stem.
Thats why you turn the valve stem pointing upwards....the little bb's just scamper right through..
I would think that the steel shot would rust and clump together.
Doubt there is enough humidity in a tire full of air to rust them, besides they have a sort of gray coating from the heating process and the constant tumbling would keep them from clumping. BTW "steel shot " is made from a variety of metals::::

I switched from beads to BB's a couple of years ago when I ran out of beads. I have broken down and changed a couple of tires (car, truck and MC) and found the BB's to be gray color instead of copper. No appreciable copper dust and no rust on the BB's. They are not shiny as you might expect, but dull gray, so I assume they take a light beating quite often in use.

I've used BB's for a long time. I've seen them at a tire change and they look the same. No "dust" inside the tire.
