My cut off switch on my right handle bar control is giving me problems. Something inside the switch is broken. I noticed this when I installed my risers and had to take it apart to re-route my throttle cables. It has be kinda touchy but I noticed it more so yesterday. If I kinda bump it it will kill the bike and I can usually wiggle it a little and it will roar back to life, but yesterday I had to come to a complete stop once to play with it enough to make it work again. Is there any way to repair this or will I have to buy the whole right hand assembly?

I've never had to mess with mine as I rarely use it. But many here have recommended taking it apart and cleaning it.

I actually don't recall anyone confirming that they have ever had a problem with the kill switch. Many think that it was, but upon further searching, found it to be something else.
Doesn't mean there can't be a 1st.
Like suggested, look into taking it apart. I would start by doing a search, and seeing all you can on the kill switch.
Because I don't think there is anything on it, please document your repairs. Would make a nice post for future reference.
I know that the starter switch can only be had as a new unit, it would make sense that the kill switch would be the same. Check used ones. I almost never use the kill switch, and would think the same for most, so would be one of the most unused items on the bike.

Well... I can confirm. I don't even touch my kill switch on my 97 Tour. It has a BAD switch. If I touch it, it kills the bike. Not switch it... Touch it. I learned this fueling up one day and it took me 20 minutes to figure out if I push and wiggle, and cuss at it, it'll fire up.
My start button works like a champ. It's the kill switch that's messing up.
I have a wrecked VTX in the garage. Wonder if I can use that switch...

Since I never used the kill switch, I bypassed it in the headlight bucket and used the switch to toggle the relay for the running lights. There was something tricky about wiring it like that, but I don't remember what it was off hand.

Hey guys....especially Pancho and Captain Combat. The kill switch is an important safety device, required if you have an annual inspection.
I would think it's ill advised to disable it, but that is your choice. If it's broken, order a new one, simple.

No inspections in my neck of the woods,, they were done away with a few years ago. I never used it for it's intended purpose (don't really understand it with a key and tip over sensor) so I put it to another use. But after seeing your comments Chris, I think I will change it back if I ever give the bike to anyone else.

One of my Valks has a "touchy" kill switch. I never use it but occasionally I have to wiggle it to get it to start. I've had it apart and cleaned but that didn't appear to help any. I've got a new one from having to buy the complete item to get a new start switch, just haven't bothered putting it on. I would think that there should be quite a few new ones available here as so many of us have had to buy the complete housing just to get a new start switch. Maybe try posting a WTB in the classifieds.

I use my kickstand to cut my bike off. I hardly ever use the kill switch mainly because I don't think about it when I park my bike.

I never use the kill switch, I kill it just like my truck... With the key. Every year in Daytona in our parking lot at least one bike had a dead battery from the kick stand method

When I replaced my starter switch the kill switch was connected to the same harness. My memory tells me that's true but I tried to confirm it but found no definitive proof. If you have to replace the starter switch (like me) you do the kill switch at the same time.

I can confirm that my kill switch also behaves the same way. It functions when I switch it, but will also kill the bike if I touch or press on it without switching it. Found this out after state safety inspection. I, like many of you, never use the kill switch (except during inspections or in a hypothetical emergency) however I don't like the finicky-ness of this... Would be nice to get a solid answer if cleaning it or something can remedy. Don't really want to spend money to replace the entire housing or a silly switch.

As long as you know how to bypass it so if it messes up, you can still get home. I would get to far from home otherwise

Speaking of switches, I suspect trouble w/my starter switch on 97 tourer. Hit the switch an click or 2 then engine turns over. Battery 8 Mos old and contacts clean and fully charged. Seems I had switch problems on 97 Shadow and they look identical. One of you said there are contacts to clean in the switch?
