changed the diaphragm put it back on the tank and now the bike runs on the off and seems to have lost reserve. is that fixeable or should i just change the whole thing? Undecided
   p.s. :no gaz leaking in cylinders

Did you put the petcock selector on the petcock wrong? The selector is just plastic so maybe it's only partially on the petcock or something and out a notch.

I'd take it back apart and look at some pictures from the tech archives to try and be sure
you didn't assemble the flaps back together wrong-side-out or anything... see that lip on
the big flap in the last picture? I don't think that is on both sides... at any rate - they're definitely
different on each side...



Then... don't put everything back together until is passes the vacuum test in this article:

Sounds like the On/Off/Res selector has been installed wrong. When the selector knob was taken off it was in the Off position, but when you put the selector back on, it was put on pointing down to the on position. This puts the selector 1/4 turn off so now all you have is off and reserve. Put the selector knob in the On position and then unscrew the selector knob and reinstall it with the selector know pointing to the Off position. You should now have all 3 selector positions.

If you are certian it is in the "off" position and it still flows gas, it needs replaced. Pull the tank and check it's functionality that way...the valk can go quite a distance on "off".

No vacuum applied, should not flow gas in any position.
Vacuum applied, should not flow gas in "off" position.
Vacuum applied, should flow tons of gas in "on" or "reserve".

thanks guys ,yes i did take the selector knob off to check its mounting position.the unit cam can only be turned 6, 9 , and12 o clock.
just realised that i didn t check the plastic selector where it attaches to the unit, it could be worn or broken.
Hubcapsc. did the rebuilt on the diaphragms and checked for function ,but i was not impressed by the seemingly low quality of the replacement kit.
the bike needs major service
.the broken foot kept me from doing it. now i ve no more excuses, exept the great riding  weather ! 2funny uglystupid2 Smiley

There's such a thing as a non-oem petcock rebuild kit... did you get an OEM "cover set" and find it
to be low quality?

hubcapsc, no that kit i got from big BF in frisco at inzane. i checked the petcock this afternoon and found the bottom damp with gaz ,no good .i will take the tank off and check it out sunday morn, meanwhile my local honda is making me a deal of $119.00 for a new unit ,any thoughts on that? Smiley

Stuff made out of little flaps and springs can be maddening to work on  Grin

If the new petcock from the dealer puts you back on your Valkyrie, then that's all that really matters...

If you're going to fool around with your current petcock on Sunday morning it would be interesting
to hear if you can get it to pass the vacuum test in the shoptalk article and still have it leak
after you reattach it to the tank...

I fixed a leaky one on my buddy's new-to-him bike with a new cover set - it leaked because of this:



The previous owner tried to fix it like this:



Since the gas couldn't drip out the weep hole, it just flowed down the vacuum line to cylinder
number six... get yours fixed good before you end up with hydrolock...

Good find,,,my 2001 will go 1/2 mile ..always... in the off pos...when this changes i,ll know time for maintenance

Paul,this what got me thinking something was wrong ,when i ran out of gas ,turned reserve on and nothing happenned.
just took the petc off .it did not work right ,the diaphragm stayed open.
cleanned everything, put the old one back ,ok. than the new one again
it seems to work now, put it back on the bike. i ll ride it to work tonight. need to find those little gas bottles just in case.
how come i did not get wet lock? its fine with me. cooldude

I experienced the same problem with mine!

Turn it to off and the gas would keep flowing. Found out when removing the tank.
If I fiddle with the knob some it would turn off but it was very sensitive and the click
did not guarantee that the gas was off. It was nothing to do with the vacuum side of
the petcock but rather the selector side.

Solved the problem with a Pingle. Now no more worry.

That's my suggestion. Get a Pingle

Yes you defenitely want reserve to work..on the road ill go 1/2 mile..in the garage she,ll idel for 5,6,7, minutes before running out of gas in the off pos..and reserves good,,dont like to have to use it but its there/  i always shut  fuel off .5 mile from home so shes dry when i hit the garage/..let us know whats up ....
