I rode the Log Truck to Mac's ride last fall, and after our
good ride through the woods , we went down I-40 for the last 30
or 40 miles... hiways speeds, 80, whatever... I had this feeling when
I'd chop the throttle, maybe a vibration, maybe my imagination.

I use I-85 for about two miles on the way to work, gotta cross
over Lake Hartwell where the bridges are. There was a log
jamb of cars and a Mac truck the other day, and when I had my
chance, I nailed it and went around them, down the hill, probably
80 or 90. I got around and took my slot in the slow lane
just as I hit the bridge, chopped the throttle, and there
was that feeling or vibration again... something wrong
in the drivetrain? Road surface changed as I hit the bridge?

Anywho... can't let the Log Truck go bad... I just took the
wheel off, pulled the driveshaft, and got the u-joint out.
It doesn't look or feel bad to me. I'm going to root around
with search and see what people say about evaluating
a u-joint.

I haven't cleaned up any of the "normal" stuff (I don't
usually take the u-joint out when I do all that other
stuff at tire-change time), but nothing's dry. Since I
have the new Valkyrie now, I change tires on the Log
Truck less, so I haven't been in there since December
of 2014. The flange looked like this then, I don't think
it is any worse now:

I wiggled the dampers, they don't seem like new, but they don't seem awful.

I probably won't start putting it back together until in
the morning (Saturday)... any ideas on what to check?

How would you evaluate the u-joint?

You didn't state the mileage. Mine went-U Joint-at 103000 miles. Had that "slight" vibration. Also my wheel bearings were toast. Twist the U-joint with your hands-if you feel any movement might want to install a new one. There was a loose "feel" to my U-joint and being as I had a new one in stock and I just replaced the wheel bearings and all this was a week BEFORE Spearfish last year.  Lips Sealed Hope I was of some help fer ya!  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Mike, Seems I've read to put the u joint in a vice and use pliers to see if ANY movement. Wish I could be more help....

I read that too... I also read to put a square shafted screwdriver in
at the cross and twist (not pry) and feel for any movement.

I pass the screwdriver test, I'll have to walk over to neighbor Dan's
house to use a vise, I guess I should do that too just to be sure,
but it sure does seem "good" so far... I've cleaned off both ends
of the drive shaft now and the flange, though I haven't taken
pictures of them yet (I can only see details at 10 megapixels
with my eyesight  Smiley ) everything I've looked at seems good...
My wheel bearings turn easy, I've always thought you could
just jamb your finger into wheel bears and if they felt and turned
good, they were probably good, y'all think so? Perhaps there's
"no problem"... I'll keep checking here for suggestions...

When mine went bad Mike, it felt good in my hands,, I reinstalled it and thought about it for awhile. Before I put everything back together, I took it back out (yeah, I did the boot twice) and put one yoke in a vice and grabbed the other with a pair of channel locks..... like that I could feel a slight back and forth give,, not anything like I would have thought could be causing the problem, but when I got a new one and installed it, the problem was gone. I only had around 50 K miles at the time,, give or take 5 K.

The Log Truck.... 2funny  I have six into six exhaust with small baffles and when pulling below 2000 RPM I have always thought it sounds like a Cummings diesel.

advice, I'll go up to Dan's house to use the vise...

Both me and Neighbor Dan unambiguously felt some
slop in the u-joint when doing the vise test... I'm
motivated to go up there and do the vise test on the
new one, having the experience of feeling it both
ways seems like a good thing.

I'll put it back together tomorrow with the
new u-joint...

I guess we just throw out old u-joints? Anybody
want to trade an old u-joint for a leaky petcock?  Smiley

Taking my used up U-joint to my brothers place in Illinois in June. He has some ideas and a lathe in his shop. He's also a crackerjack fabricator. RIDE SAFE.
