I discovered this some time ago (back before the price for alternator covers went out of sight).  I started using EVERCOAT part #100116 to reduce the sound of transmission covers by coating the side close to the transmission with the stuff. Having bunches left over, I coated the back side of the alternator cover too.  That was several years ago and haven't had to replace the one on my Interstate yet.  It still looks new.  The stuff has gotten more expensive since then, but there is probably enough material there to cover at least 12-14 alt. covers.  If you have a friend, share.  Works real easy by cutting to size, heating with a heat gun, then removing the cover from the sticky side and pressing into place.  The heat makes it pliable enough to mold into the complex curves of the corners.  Warning-too much heat and you could burn your fingers.  After placing the material you can always add more heat and use a paper towel to press it down.  Oh yes, it won't slide after it's put in place...Jim

Jim, I'm wondering if that would work on the underneath side of the rear fender on my 1200 project. I was just going to spray it with undercoat but maybe this would be a time saver.

This is before I mounted braces on either side, give a better side view.

John, I can't see where it would save you any time and would be considerably more expensive since you would have to buy much more material than you would need...Jim

Im with you on that. Even some of the metal tape for ducting would reflect the heat off. I do know this. When I got my valk last summer my cover was fine. But after installed the chrome trans covers the dreaded crinkle happened. I think that the heat cant dissipate due to the covers and over heats the plastic alt cover and the chrome and copper separate.  Sad I'd like to see how many with no trans covers and with trans covers have crinkled. Bet the latter has way more. especially if you also have the covers for around the ing switch and left area too.

Both my bikes have the Kury trans covers.  One is pristine on the 55K bike.  The other got wrinkled badly on the 90K bike (and was already started when I bought it with 24K).

Besides gas (or other) spills (which I am skeptical of), I think it is caused by too much sitting and idling on hot hot days.

Could some alternators be hotter than others?  As far as I know, the alternator on my 90K bike is original, and working fine.

I installed this under the alternator covers on both my bikes. So far no issues.

Could doing this insulate the cover to the extent that overheating would damage the alternator?

I still have some of this stuff (Evercoat).  Used it under my Kury trans covers on both Valks for sound deadening.  Never thought of putting under the alt cover.  Still have the original alt cover on my Std, looks new.  Replaced the one on my I/S under warranty 12 years ago, still no bubbles.  Sitting on 3 new alt covers I got from Europe @ $17 ea.   Couldn't pass that up.  (they are Not for sale)   Wink

I wouldn't think it would make a difference.
