The other day, I ran into a Goldwing Rider and discussed ridng dark side. Thinking about it I decided that I will make the jump to the dark side. I have riden my VTX with a car tire and loved it.

Now I am looking to see which is the best fit for my interstate. I want to avoid any modifications to make it fit and to avoid rubbing. Any suggestions on what size tire I should use on my interstate, and does anyone know who would mount a tire in the Oklahoma City area?

A tire that has peaked my interest is the Kuhmo Ecsta 195/60 R16.  I believe I am going to have to try it on my next tire change.  I have been running the Yokohama Avid Envigor in a 205/60R16 size.

been riding a CT for over 6 years now. i use the 205/60/16 CT which if you do needs to have the nut cage Mod. if you do not want to do the Mod then go with the 195/60/16. the best advice i can give as to which type of CT is to pick one the has rounded shoulders, stay away from the squared ones. the rounded shoulder CT pretty much rides and acts like a MC tire just a hole lot more grip. as to psi when you go dark side that is determined by your riding (by self,2 up ) a start PSI is around 36psi and then test it. i have rode a CT in the Mnt and through twists. no troubles. and it grips great when you get caught in a down pour for 3 hours.

I ride with an Austone Taxi tire on my IS as well....but I am set up in Solo mode.  If you ride 2up loaded down often, it might not be the best choice since it is a tall tire.  Some here crank up the shock setting to prevent any bottoming out of tire to fender and it works.  I've not yet rubbed that I am aware of.

Try it....you will like it.

Austone Taxi Tire!

I'm currently on a square edge tire, and don't like it. But I agree with all others, Its Different. Will I change it, no, I'll wait about 1K or more, and see what I think later on.

I rode a ATT on my GW GL1500, and did not notice any difference between the MC tire and the replacement CT. Loved how it was a larger diameter than the OEM. Lowered my rpm about 300 at my usual 70 mph.

I am riding the darkside on my interstate & standard here in the uk,they both have a 205/60/16 altimax general hp,the tyre rides great on the standard but is a bit squishy on the i/s so i am looking at the austone taxi tyre but the speed rating is only 99 mph, could someone give me the proper spec of the att tyre that they use.thanks in advance.

I noticed a slight shimmy at triple digits below 42 psi, which is now my minimum psi with the Austone.  I usually bump it up to 44 when two up.  Combined with13" HD Progressive 444s, no rubbing or bottoming.  I would not recommend this tire with a shorter shock.

I run 60 psi.

You'll wear out the center of the tread quickly at 60 psi.
You'll bounce over bumps objectionably, if not unsafely.

Seriously, start at something under 40 psi and go down in 2 lb. increments until you find the sweet spot for you.  I'm running an Austone on my IS at 42 psi. Other radial car tires need less pressure for good traction and a smooth ride.

I hope you did the Nut Cage Mod as well.

I run 60 psi.
That's more than extreme for PSI in just about any automotive tire, you need to drop at least 20 PSI for starters. After dropping the pressure down(safer also) with that tire you shouldn't vary much more than 2-3PSI over or under 40. With extreme pressure you are running the chance of popping a bead under some stress circumstances.

Tire is engineered for weight and heat, the low weight of a motorcycle enables the higher pressure.Ive been riding the dark side 15 years at 60 psi...like the handling ..but thanks for the warning.

I just put an Ecsta on my Interstate last week, Joe. It's my first foray into the DS... I'm VERY pleased with this tire! I went with the 195 because I didn't want to deal with nut cage mod and assumed (correctly) that it would feel more like the 180 width Avon I'd been running.

I started out with 36psi but after a 325-mile blitz thru the twistes 3-days after mounting I bumped it up to 38psi. I'll be thrilled if I only get an additional 2-4k miles from it vs the 10k I was getting from the Avon Cobra. I got the Kuhmo for $88, delivered to my door off Amazon.

Cheers!

I've been running the Taxi as well, it was on my bike when I got it and was a little skeptical. I have about 5k miles on with it now and have no plans to ever go back to a M/C tire on this bike. I've had it over 120mph GPS verified (though I got a little wobble at 37psi, I may bump it to 42 now) and have taken some serious full lean sweepers at 85+ with no handling issues whatsoever. This tire in my opinion will do anything a M/C tire will do, except wear out every couple months.

Just put an ATT on mine.  Not enough handling difference between the Bridgestone MC tire I replaced and the ATT to make any difference, though I'm only in the first 100 miles and haven't pushed them.

I have an ATT to install, but am having trouble finding a shop that will do it.

Any advice? Everybody claims liability issues.

Hey Bob, I'm not sure how far away these guys are from you. Or if they would do it. But worth a call.

These days I go to a used tire place to get mine installed, no questions asked, they just install it.
