I'm always amazed when someone is "stranded" because the road which they planned to take is somehow not available. If it was me I would just have an excuse to ride a little more. There is more than one way to go anywhere. the next pass, south or the next or the next....
We met poeple in Albuquereque who had been "stranded" for two days in the snow storm Jan1, 2007 because I-40 was closed. We drove 65 miles south and headed on east.....

LOL...yeah that too was my philosophy until I got an "education" in Wyoming early in March 2007. I first ran into snow on I-80 in Rock Springs, WY... I barely made it off the Interstate before I eventually went down trying to pull in the motel parking lot. I checked the weather map at the motel and unfortunately things didn't look any better south of me, however it did look better if I could make it past Laramie and into Cheyenne. The snow stopped, the roads melted so I got back on the road, I was just approaching Laramie when it started snowing so hard I could not see. I managed to pull off the road and wait. Fortunate for me it stopped long enough for me to get up to the next exit 7 miles ahead. Sometimes there is no way to get to the better route...and in that case the smart thing to do is realize that you are stranded!! I will NEVER make that same mistake again...I consider myself lucky to be alive.
