Hi All,

The manual talks about installing a new oil seal onto the propeller shaft and then insert into the final drive. It does not, however, give any instructions on HOW to do it...

Any techniques? How do I remove the circlip and spring? I assume once that's done, the oil seal slides off and then I can slide a new one on?

Once I slide on a new oil seal and press the shaft back into the final drive, I assume I can just push the oil seal in with my fingers?

Your help is appreciated.

Yes, you will need to remove the circlip and seat from the forward end, then the spring comes off and the oil seal slides off.  Once the new oil seal is slid on, it never moves undtil you slide it off someday.  Make sure its facing the right way and all the way onto its seat.

Is there a method to remove the circlip? Screwdriver blade?

circlip pliers is the best way, but since I don't have those either I used a small needle nose in conjunction with an ice pick

Its a pain by yourself. If you've got someone to help you will be glad. You have to push down it and then with a circlip tool spread it and move it up.

Did mine By MYSELF with a small screw driver and needle nose pliers. Wasn't bad.

Cogsman, if you are doing it by yourself use hubcaps gizmo. You'll be glad you did.

Just wondering why you're replacing that seal, is it losing the grease from inside the cup? It doesn't spin inside the cup so there's no wear on it from abrasion.

I've used a wire tie on each side of the spring to keep it compressed so that the circlip can be removed and reinstalled.  Simply slip the tie under the coils, compress the spring and tighten the tie on each side...

Since I normally work alone.   I pushed the spring down and locked vice grips on the shaft to hold the spring in place.  AND used a  circlip tool to remove/replace the clip.  Worked great.

My seal had to be replaced,

Both good ideas. Hopefully I can remember them the next time I have to do it.
