Standing on the Corner in Winslow Arizona fest

Well, it’s that time of the year again, my lady and I will be saddling up the Valk early Friday morning and heading to Winslow Arizona for the Standing on the Corner in Winslow Arizona festival.  This is the 11th year of this fest.  It’s not a big fest but about half the people who attend arrive on two wheels and it features great music.  As usual, we will be hold up at the Wigwam motel in Holbrook, 30 miles East of Winslow on Route 66, Friday and Saturday evening.  We may trip up to Canyon De Chelley early Saturday and get back in time for the evening festivities in Winslow later that evening. We’ll have to grab at least one meal at the famous La Posada hotel in Winslow.  It’s one of the last Harvey houses hotel/restaurants still in existence.  If you’re in the area look us up.

When Hard6 and I went west with Kendall and Des a couple of years ago, we did the same thing.  Stayed at the Wigwam - ummmmm, don't tell the little old lady at the desk you know us.



Des and Kendall took us to a cool Mexican place for dinner - down the road on the right (I think across the street from a dinasaur statue or something).

Then the next day is off to stand on the corner in Winslow.....

I liked that town and whole area.  Have a safe trip!!!!

I think we had the one right next to you.  The one with the red curtains - Hard6 told the little old lady that we wanted the honeymoon suite (tee pee) because we had just gotten married and then threw his arm around my shoulder.  I was looking at the neat stuff in the lobby and when he threw his arm over my shoulder, I spin my head around and stand straight and smile at the little lady - not knowing what had just been said.

She looks at the two of us...and says "Um, OK.....Congratulations!"

We had the Wigwam with the red curtains in it!  Like I said, don't let her know you know us.

Taking a shower is neat in a Wigwam!  You will be at an angle the entire time....TAKING A SHOWER ALONE I MEAN!

Alone?  You must not know Cruzi' Dave and Cheryl.  They set off fire alarms when they shower, if I remember right.

My lady and I spend a lot of time cruzing around or passing through the Holbrook/Winslow area so we stay at the Wigwam four to six times per year.  Number 9 is our room.  Your right about the showers.  What we enjoy is leaving the room door open, sitting outside on the bench that is right there and visiting with other guests who stop by to either talk bikes or just visit.  It’s entirely different than staying in a conventional hotel.

Butterfield Steak House within walking distance just down the street is our favorite dinner place.  Has the best fried chicken dinner I have ever had.  We don’t even get menu’s and one of the waiters knows our order by heart.

The history of Holbrook is bloody.  In one year when the population was 300 people, there were 26 murders/killings.  That’s nearly 10%. One saloon was named the Bucket of Blood Saloon.  They had a hanging tree down the block from the courthouse.  Makes places like Dodge or Tombstone seem darn right civil. Lots of history currently on display in their courthouse.  My lady is interested in shoot outs, don’t know way but she is, and on this trip she wants to get into the Blevins house.  It was the seen of a bloody shootout in the late 1800’s and is now used as some sort of retirement home.
