Some have added them in order to "supervalk" their Interstate, i.e. make it so the top box is removable, yet still have a tail light.

That's usually because they want to ride without the trunk at times, so they have to add a taillight.

I added one to mine just for the extra light to be seen betterMe too Bighead.  If you want to add light to the back of an interstate, what better way than putting it where a light was designed to go, with a knockout already in the fender (and parts in the pipeline)? And it's a bigger light than the little ones in the trunk. And the plug and play multi-led array that goes in that socket is much easier to install than converting the trunk lights to led.

The spoiler is LED and really lights things up especially with the flashing LED's you can see on the trunk mounts |

The more interesting question might be.... why Honda deleted it in the Interstate (IS) at all? Of course they wanted to make the IS different, and the trunk lights were different (and higher tail lights are always better than lower). But they wanted to keep the fenders identical for all models, so they just put the knockout panel in the hole, and deleted the wiring to it. Cost savings, I guess. (that and the std tail light lens will hit the CB mounted under the trunk, for those that added one later; a CB did not come with the bike)
What I especially like about the LED array under the trunk is since it is nearly always in the shade, it doesn't get drowned out by sunlight like so many leds. I ride with some Hogs that are all led in back, and the running lights nearly disappear in sunlight, only to suddenly reappear as we ride under the shade of a tree canopy, making me think they are hitting the brakes. Now the brake light leds are always visible, sun or shade.

I had a 1999 black Interstate. The rear tail light was on the rear fender from the factory. Evidently it was one of the first I/S manufactured.

I bought an entire fender assembly from a standard and installed it today with a new harness.
My question is about the seat. Currently the single piece seat uses the bracket on the trunk. Can the seat work without that?
Anyone got a solo seat or know where I can get one?
