My "Mid-life Crisis "

Indiana

« on: June 22, 2016, 12:02:00 PM »

When something works as advertised , I like to give props.A week prior to Inzane , I was going over my bike again and noticed oil leakage from the left fork seal. Not enough time to order parts and then replace seals...tried  Seal Mate...didn't fix the leak..had tried it before on my Goldwing and didn't work too...plus very hard to hold onto when oil gets on it.. so I decided to try Seal Doctor that I had seen good reviews on. Ordered one from local powersport shop , had it 2 days later ...worked the first time , plus , easy to grip and turn even with oil on it.If you don't have one ..GET ONE ! When the day comes that you have a seal leak , it's a whole lot cheaper and time saving that a seal replacement job. Also when you flip it upside down , it cleans the dust seal !

Seal mate worked great for my leaky seal, though it was hard to push it around with oil on there--and more comes out while you're doing it. Almost got seal doctor but costs more so I got the cheaper one first  Grin

I received mines last week. It's easier to use and even has a holder that you clip the gizmo onto to prevent damaging it while in the toolbox. As a caveat, verify the shipping charge. For example, I bought it with a group of items from an different Amazon vendors and only saw the shipping fee for the Seal Doctor was like $10 on the invoice inside the package.

The Seal Doctor is a great design.  It stopped a serious leak on my Interstate.  I first tried the old 'film trick' but that didn't work.

Luckily a local motorcycle shop keeps them in stock so there was no waiting and no shipping charge.

Yeah it's pretty cool how that can seal itself back up. Evidently a piece of trash gets between the seal and the fork tube and reeks havoc – well gravity is also working against you with the flow of oil. But I used the seal mate on my right fork tube about a year and a half ago, it was leaking a lot, and it hasn't leaked at all since.  If my front forks weren't working so well I'd wonder if there was any oil in there Grin.  Of course there will be cases where the piece of trash sliding up and down creates a permanent leak path in the seal, in which case the seal doctor or seal mate trick won't work.

I don't see how you could pull the stopper ring out with the Seal Doctor.  Even if you did it would be easy to snap it back in.

Just follow the instructions that come with your seal doctor..... gently pry the dust seal out and slide it down out of the way( make sure you wipe down the forks first  to remove any  dirt) after you have finished using the seal doctor on your Forks simply slide and press the dust seal back into place
