Hey All. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement START STOP SWITCH for my Valk?! It failed me today and I am planning to take it with me to NC this Sat. I was at the gym earlier when it just quit. I rolled started it to get home but this sucks! the button just went in and didn't pop back out. I tried spraying it with electrical contact cleaner, even disassembled the housing and tried to fix it but I'm pretty sure its dead. I tried to find one on Amazon or Ebay but no luck. I will even try a good used one just to get by. or if anyone knows a temporary solution till i can fix it the right way, I'm almost ready to go nyc/bronx/ghetto (where I'm from) and hot wire it - as they say, ride it like you stole it! LOL (bummers)

Take it apart & clean it. There are extensive instructions & tutorial pics on the VRCC website in the garage section. We did Rick's {Flask} starter button repair while we were in NC last year. Clean & regrease the contacts & you are good to go. Just don't lose the spring. Otherwise just order a new RH control from HDL or your dealer & pay the overnight freight. Been there done that! Did it right there in this parking lot!

If you end up replacing the RH control be warned that the harness goes into the headlamp. Not a real hard job just a little time consuming.

I have two used ones, you're welcome to both to try and if one works install it. Just open the headlight bucket and plug it in, hit the start button and if the bike starts and shuts off with the kill sw., install it. Settle up when you return. I can ship it via USPS or even meet you halfway between Orlando and your place. Let me know. John One I believe came from Eddie so it's possible the guts are melted because of him riding when the temps are 1500F.

Good thing i had a little incline down to push start with.. thanks, Guys!

It is heartwarming to see people that have extra parts lend a helping hand. No sarcasm intended, just really nice to see.
Don't forget that warm heart feeling when I start doing maintenance to my Valk! I'm gonna need all the heart I can get!

I fixed it! now I'm really becoming a true Valk group member, got my hands dirty! LOL anyway, thanks to all who chimed in with help, suggestions and offers! Hey, John, I think I'd still like to get one of those 2 you have as a spare, I'll buy it from you and I will go get it (excuse to ride). Believe it or not it was a bit burnt. I used a pocket knife to "repair it" and then I used my wife's nail buffering square sponge to clean and polish the contacts and put it all back together. I suspect it will fail again in the near future which is why i think i want to carry a spare. But man am I happy I got it working. Push starting this beast ain't easy and I didn't want to leave it behind and go to NC without her. Thanks to all you! what a great group we have here...

Galex, glad you're up and running for now. I'll double check these to make certain they're operational, but you need to look at the link below. Scroll down to "Start switch safeguard" and read up on it. It involves installing a relay in the headlight bucket to relieve the start sw. of the majority of current passing through it, the eventual cause of failure. And to think some riders actually add to that by running their driving lights off the same circuit, then wonder why it fails. I forget the amps involved but with the relay the amps carried by the start sw. is a fraction of 1 amp. If you do that and install a good switch, you shouldn't ever be bothered with that same problem again. Let me know your plans, I have a friend coming over tomorrow a.m.(Thursday) to pick up some parts. If needed, I also have a relay and plenty of wire for you to install as described. I'll PM you my home phone. http://www.rattlebars.com/mtz/starter.html

Galex, good to read you got it fixed. My Shadow did the same thing, I rode 4 miles got gas and then nothing. Called my buddy Eddie and he came to the rescue with his trailer. You must be a BEAR to push start the phat lady. The Shadow was a lot lighter and we could not push start it. I did what you did filed the contacts with fine finger nail file put it back together and it was good to go. Sold it about a year later and it was still good. I did buy a used assembly that had been tested just to get the starter button for a back up. Honda dealer makes you buy the whole assembly just to get the button. Enjoy those NC roads and cooler temps and when you get back check board for rides Ride Safe Steve

Before you put it back together did you make sure the contacts were free to bounce up and down, not stuck in its slot. If it was stuck, you are correct, it will happen again.

Hello All. I wanted to thank you all for giving me great advice and suggestions. In the end, that's exactly what helped me resolve the issue. There's nothing like the power of knowledge combined with a sense of great community. I want to especially thank John and Mike (OnaWingandaPrayer) for arranging to get me a spare switch to carry just in case. I can now go to NC tomorrow feeling more secure knowing if it fails again I've got a plan-b. But better than that, I've got this great group to call upon :-) John/Mike, eventually I will catch up to you guys for a ride and then lunch on me!
Hey Chris, I did have the sense to realize that little spring on the contact had a purpose. So yes I did ensure it was functioning properly. I benched tested it then put it all together, it didn't feel 100% smooth so i redid it and now it feels near perfect. However it did look a little brown, like it shorted or something and I suspect it could happen again, hence carrying the spare. Sixlow, thanks for the link it looked like mine!
I don't have time to do the smart switch/relay before I go but when i get back I do plan to do it. up until now I've be reluctant to try and do thing myself since i'm no MC mechanic but ever since this experience i've gained some confidence. so thanks again to all! great group of folks in here!
PS: Tourus5, when I got stuck I panicked but then remembered a MC can be push started. I got lucky that there has a slight decline to help, not much but at least it wasnt uphill. I had just come out of the gym but gotta tell you, pushing the phat girl was a harder workout. LOL when I got home, before i turned her off, I put it right on the trailer in case I was forced to take it to my mech because i knew I would not be able to push start it again! makes me wish I had a kick starter on it. LOL
