So, a question for the collective;

On my 2000 Valkyrie Interstate, every time I start the bike the trip odometers reset.  I did a search on the forum and found one mention of it back in '09 that gave a link the splice block but the link is no longer active.

Initially, when I first noticed the issue it did not occur each and every time I started the bike just occasionally.  I thought I had traced the problem to an exposed hot wire coming from the battery that may or may not have been occasionally touching bare metal.  I fixed that and thought the problem had been found and fixed.  However over the last several months I've noticed that the problem has reoccurred and is happening with increased frequency.  Now almost every time I start the bike the trip odometers reset.

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks!

Marc

Mine will do that if the battery is getting weak. A good two or three hour ride usually fixes it. I guess you could use a battery charger also.  cooldude

Based upon the above stmt, maybe a volt meter and see what your battery is before, during, and after a start.

I have a volt/clock/temp LED that was posted about a while again, and sometimes I plug it into the cig lighter socket, and see what happens while starting my bike. 12.6v drop to 10.5v while cranking (instant start), then up to 13.5v at idle.

It may be worth doing the starter switch service if you haven't already tried that.

I agree with the idea that the battery is getting weak .  I had the same problem and a new battery fixed it.

Could have a battery or battery connection, sounds like the odometer is having the positive or ground robbed during start up or has no power while key is off (memory). Are all fuses good?

Book says there is a red/yellow at the combination meter that should have 12 volts all the time but you would have to get to it inside fairing.

Thanks for all the input.  I appreciate it.  I have had to put the battery on a charger and most recently I drove to work and when I went to leave in the afternoon I found the battery dead.  Got a jump start and went home and purchased a new battery.  Haven't had the problem since so I think that those that indicated a weak battery are probably correct.

regards,

Marc.
