I have been searching locally for a pair of 4"x24" chromed truck stacks, and am being told that most places do not carry 4" diameter pipe. They tell me that they have 5"- 6", even 8", but not the 4". Is there a good place on line to order some from? I just put oem exhaust on my trike, and want to bring the pipes out from under the rear of the bike. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks Mike in Ar

I got a single 6 foot piece off e bay and cut it in half with our band saw at work. Painted the cut ends silver. Paid around 40 bucks if I remember right.

The 18" stacks will be about an inch short of coming to the edge of the trike body. Are there any problems that y'all can think of that this might cause. The trike is an I/S with a set of standard or tour pipes installed. It had the Mark T's glass packs on it, but I guess I'm too old, cause they about drove the wife and I nuts on our 4300 mile vacation. I was given the standard set of pipes, so that is what I put on.

I have the 4 inch pipes on my bike and I wish I didn't. Just sayin. They are too loud for my taste. That's the way it came to my buddy when he bought it and that's the way I bought it. They have a nice bass sound. In my ear they sound better than the Cobra 6x6 but, twist that throttle and you'll let people know for a long way off. It's like a cop magnet too. This coming from a retired cop.. I'd really like to go back to a quieter exhaust.

Falconbrother, that is why I put the oem pipes on my trike. I am just trying to extend them to get them out from under bike a bit.

With zero trike experience I have no idea if an inch or two under the (solid body) rear end would create any sort of vortex or back draft of exhaust fumes (or what about at stops just waiting for the light?). I would ask the trike makers that question. Obviously, this is more important than just noise. I would not think that an inch or two would be a serious noise issue, but it probably would be a bit noisier than exhaust fully exiting the rear end (though pure stock is pretty quiet). Also, I have read many times that downturns or slash cuts turned down will bounce the noise off the pavement back up at the rider/passenger. The trike should not lean so dragging downturns should not be an issue, but speed bumps and protruding things can still be an issue. Reversing (if the trike has it) could also be a down turn issue (hitting unseen things). Personally, I'm a big straight cut fan, for looks, low noise and function.

Jess, I agree with you, I prefer the flats over the others. I was wondering if the air flowing under the trike body might force the fumes out past that on inch. I also thought that maybe I could add a set of Grumpy's tips to the end and maybe gain an inch or so that way. Do you think that would do it? I'm just kicking around some thoughts, not really sure if they will work. I'm open to any thoughts and ideas on this. Thanks

Mike,
I extended my standard exhaust 18" to protrude past the bumper of my trike using 4" alumnized truck exhaust pipe - didn't need chrome as it was out of view.
I also extended my piggies 1/2" past the Tourer tips using 3/4 copper tube.
The sound is good from standing start shifting up thru the gears & when accelerating. Otherwise it's not noticeable from on the trike.
You've heard the set-up when we rode together, but probably didn't notice.
Let me know if you want to check it out & we can meet up.
Dan

Dan, I would like to see your trike again. Maybe we can get together sometime next week, and kick around some ideas. I got a new phone back in may, and not all of my numbers transferred over to the new phone. Unfortunately, yours was one that did not make the move. If you still have my number, give me a call, or pm me your number.

Mike, you're better off talking with Dan than me.
My only comment would be that as nice as Bill's tips are, I probably wouldn't spend for them to hide them underneath a trike rear end.
Using hidden aluminzed extensions (with any chrome trim tips just for dress beyond the bumper, if you want) sounds like a good idea. The idea of not having to polish chrome underneath (laying on my back) sounds like a real good idea.

I think otherwise unmolested OEM mufflers with open truck stacks would be loud compared to unmolested OEM mufflers with OEM tips. The quietest OEM setup is the Interstate, with longer piggies that reach most of the way to the ends of the cans and the cans are smashed flat (minimal echo chamber). I, too, have extended my piggies a little past the ends of my Tourer cans, and getting the piggies out of the cans (echo chambers) makes it even quieter. -Mike

I used Standard 4" 18 gauge steel exhaust tubing and VHT baked on high heat paint when I made slash cut tips. I purchased the tubing from my exhaust peeps for $10 for 40".

Thanks to everyone for the tips and ideas. Have decided not to use chrome. Will go with regular exhaust pipe, extend the piggies, and and use the oem tips to come out from under the edge of the trike body about 1-2 inches. I appreciate all the replies and ideas.

My piggy's were cut off by the previous owner and with the stock tips it sucked. Vert "tinny" sounding. The open slash cuts are 100% better w/o being loud. Just a nice mellow roar. You might try it before extending the piggys.
