I've been smelling gas from the Interstate when riding, and it's having some sporadic sputtering.  Noticed some dried gas on top of the alternator cover today.  Am I on the right track thinking these are related, and a petcock repair kit is my solution?

Probably! Are you possibly interested in converting the OEM to manual? Take it apart, remove ALL the guts and go to a local hardware store for two different sized o-rings. Takes a smaller one on the inside of the center section and a larger one on the outside of that same piece. Seal off the week hole and the vacuum hole, leaving just the fuel line open. Put it back together and use the control knob as always, just remember to shut the fuel off each time or install an elec. shutoff.

That's what I figured.  Sad  I may have to go the manual route, but I'd like to stay stock for now.  I've got a trip planned to NM early next week so I ordered a K&L kit.  If anyone knows the ring sizes John mentioned I may go pick them up so I'll have 'em in case case the kit doesn't arrive in time.  Guess those o-rings would need to be viton?

I have seen a lot of different opinions on the petcock issue.  For me I rebuilt the petcock and purchased a viton vacuum tube.  I sometimes leave the key in the ignition so remembering to manually shut off the fuel is never going to happen.  I did entertain the notion of an electric shut-off (i.e. Dan-Marc) but ultimately decided against.  You probably don't need it, but I have a video of a petcock rebuild.

Note:  If there is a hole in the fuel diaphragm (the smaller one), converting your valve to remove the vacuum function without replacing that diaphragm will NOT fix a fuel leak from the fuel valve.
