I'm starting the tear down of the back end of the valkyrie.

Gonna have to take off the muffler, swing arm won't go down enough.

Any warnings/pointers before I put a socket on those studs?

You don't have to remove them. Remove the exhaust hanger nuts, spread the exhaust out, wedge a 1/2 inch piece of plywood in between and you will have enough room to lower the swing arm.

I've never had one of those muffler studs give me grief.

If you remove the cap nuts and use a wood shim, the exhaust pipes will move over enough to let the swing arm down.

I have serviced the rear end multiple times and never had the need to touch either the exhaust or the exhaust hangers. I use a HF motorcycle/ATV lift under the engine block to raise the front only and a separate floor jack to lift the rear using the kickstand cross member. Lift the front and then the rear and remove the rear shocks. Once the shocks are removed, use the floor jack to bring down the rear (you might still not have clear access to the rear axle nut). I then slowly bring the front down on the MC/ATV lift (quick stomps on lever) till I can get clear access to the rear axle nut. Once the axle nut/rod is removed, use the floor jack to lift the rear again to get enough clearance to remove the rear tire (I always remove the lower half of the rear fender).

You guys add so much WORK to an already hardish job.  Just raise the swingarm and remove the axle over the top of the muffler.  No need to mess with the exhaust or the rear portion of the rear fender.

I'll look to see if that can be done. The swingarm does not appear to be moving much.
Probably stuck due to never having been done before.

And i gotta take the pipes off so I can put new gaskets in. Old ones are pooched.

I also found a front exhaust bolt broken off. Gotta be where the extra noise is coming from.

That's correct, on a Standard.  With a Tourer or I/S, especially with bags rails, it's easier to go low.
