I'm trying to remove the exhaust studs. The outer ones I can reach with my
ratchet and extension, easily.

The inner ones appear to be near impossible to access with socket or wrench.

So, how do you get at them inside six?

1'4 inch drive swivel. 1/4 inch 6 inch extension and of course 1/4 socket. When you reinstall use 1/4 inch star washers, with teeth facing out. Will help with them loosening up. Need to check several times and continue to tighten after first 4 or 5 rides. Just tighten snug.

Easy. A plain ole wrench works fine, as does a 1/4" drive wobble socket. If one doesn't work the other will.

Quarter inch sockets/ratchets are your friend (all over the bike, but esp the exhaust).

Luckily I did have a set of 1/4" wobble. They didn't really get up in there
either, but I did managed to get the right side six loosened. What a PITA.

Now I'm looking at what remains of the muffler hanger. Somebody (mechanic)
busted off one of the bolts. Gonna be very gentle with the remaining one.

Why are you removing the pipes? Not necessary for rear wheel removal.

Haven't taken them off yet, but will eventually to change the gaskets, which, after 18 years,
are almost certainly done.

Not necessarily! If they are quiet and are making no noise, I would say the are still doing the job.
