Need to change the fork seals on my '99 Interstate. Specifically, which parts should I get?

Honda sells a 'seal set' which includes the oil seal and dust wiper.  You could just buy the seal as it's a very common size (same as the GL-1800).  You also need 2 bottles of their SS-8 fork fluid, or an equivalent 10 weight fork oil.  That's all, though some also replace the bushings as long as you're in there.

Need to change the fork seals on my '99 Interstate.

I take it they are leaking? Have you tried the 2 methods out there first? There is the 35mm film trick and a seal tool (2 types/makes).

Seems most oil leaks are caused by debris in the seal, and the oil leaking around it. Clean the seal, and the oil leak stops.

Quite true, try cleaning the seal first.  I've used the Seal Doctor with great success.  It cleans better than the film trick, and is a better design than the Seal Mate.

If you do need to replace the seal (I always do both since it cost very little more) then there are a few things that you will need along with some others that make the job quicker and easier.
Valkyrie Manual (at least the parts pertaining to changing the fork seals)- Down loadable from Valkyrie Norway.
Honda seal set-(51490-MW0-003)
Honda tool (07YMA-MZ0010A)
Fork Oil
Motion Pro - Fork seal driver 45mm
                 Fork oil level tool
                 Fork seal bullet
Follow the manual step by step and most anyone can do it just as good as a pro. (pay particular attention to the way that the oil seal is installed-don't ask how I know that is important)
Hopefully, you won't need to change out the seals, but maybe this will be helpful if you do...Jim Smiley

Thanks for all the replies. I've used the seal tool, and haven't had a problem for almost a year. It's starting up again (same side). The main reason I'm considering replacing is that I've lost quite a bit of oil from that side and I'm fearful it may be too low. If I have to replace the oil to get the levels right, I might as well replace the seals. Am I flawed in my thinking?

If you only need to replace the seals (and maybe the bushings) but not the springs, DON'T FOLLOW THE MANUAL!  There's a much easier method that was posted here years ago.  It doesn't require complete disassembly, not even the special Honda tool.  It's much faster, and you can even do it with the forks still mounted on the bike.

The board has changed since then, but I kept a screenshot:

Do you have any links , information or pics on this Seal Doctor?  How does it work?

Here it is:

It's a really great design.  It wraps around the fork tube so you can rotate it and not remove the stone guards.

I used this:

http://sealmate.net/

Cheap, simple and effective. And I can carry it on the bike. Takes up no space.
