Hi Terry,
Walt has a broken scapula on the right side, (not in 4 places as Jim said), a chip off the neck vertebrae and whiplash. Broken rib on right side, and broken thumb and index finger on left hand. He was still able to flip off our friend Ken kiddingly, who drove me up there. Two bloody knees and multiple bruises and scratches and a black right eye. However, his sense of humor remains intact.
He is in Gundersen Lutheran in LaCrosse which is about the best hospital I can imagine. They are caring, compassionate and just the best people we've met.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Jim Hohlfeld who has Stinger in his garage and came to visit Walt twice in the hospital. What a sweet man.
Our friend, Ken Gordon, a certified EMT has been a Godsend at this time. Dropped what he was doing to get me up there, and explained what the Drs. were saying while I was freaking out. We also had several family members and friends step up to care for our 3 dogs at the drop of a hat. You never really realize how many people are there for you until something like this happens, and I never thought it would happen to Walt.
It's been hell to watch how hard Walt struggles to make it back with OT & PT despite the pain. He's a real trooper. The plan now is to get his oxygen levels and meds straightened out. Ken and I plan on driving back up on Friday and bring him home on Saturday.
He won't be driving for awhile until he checks out with a Neurologist as the hit he took to his head was pretty bad.
I am SO grateful to SO many people I don't even know, and so is Walt. His comment on the ride was "It was great until it ended!"
We have a long way to go when he gets home, but I am ready, willing, and able to help the man I love.
In case you want it, his phone number at the hospital is 608-775-3310. Our home phone number is 847-470-0395, and you know his email address. I know he would enjoy any contact.
thank you all so much.
Laurie
So hope this helps explains to you how Walt is doing and hanging in there like a real trooper but still along ways from feeling good as would anyone be. If you want to wish him well next week after he has been home for awhile that would be great.
Get well cards can be sent to Walt Instrup, 2751 Norwood Terrace, Glenview, IL 60025
