Disconect at the bottom, pull cable out.  That will tell you if your cable is broke.  A lot of people neglect lubricating their cables.  If you have it apart clean and lube while you're at it. Also on the end of the front axle is the gear box that drives the tach.  A couple of years ago the tab that connects to the cable broke off in the gear box on my bike.

Well, doesn't the drive on the front wheel spin the speedo/odo? I ask because my tach stopped working a few weeks ago. It was a poor connection in where the ignition key is.

Yes, the speedo on the standard and tourer is cable driven, but the tach is electronic. There are connectors in the headlamp that need checking, especially the single yellow/green wire connection.

I believe mine quit working when my alternator failed. Hope your problem is less expensive, but something to check.

Mine quit after I tossed a magnetic tank bag over it.

Researched it here & learned you could draw it back to the "0" position with a magnet & all was OK.

Just FYI for future reference.  The tach is powered by the same fuse that powers your taillight on a std/tourer, IIRC.  If you lose your tach it's likely your taillight may also be out.
