http://www.palmdr.com/cart/garmin-zumo-450-and-550-repair-service-p-141.htmlyesterday I was working on my bike and I had to turn the ignition on and off a few times. When I turned off the key, I did tell the GPS (a Zumo 450) to shut down except for 2 times I forgot to do so. Well anyway my Zumo is not functioning at all, it will not boot up. I visited the Zumo forum and researched what to do and tried removing the battery and reinstalling and I also tried holding the + and Power buttons as recommended but it still would not boot up. I then (on the Zumo Forum) came across the name of the above company for repair service, so before I tried them I wanted to see if anyone has heard of them or used their service. Thanks, Mike

it's not powering up at all..either in the cradle/mount on the bike or off the bike on battery power. I even tried to get a response out of it my plugging it in to my computer and accessing the Garmin website but it will not communicate to the computer either. The battery should have a near full charge because I was out riding last weekend with the GPS in the off position, which charges the battery. I never thought about removing it from the cradle while working on the bike so it wasn't powering on every time I turned the key on for power.

One forum I saw said to leave the battery out for at least 10 minutes.
Also, I don't know anything about this repair company.

I had something similar with my 550, trying to figure out what the deal was, I tried taking a pencil eraser and cleaning the contacts, also the battery was not charging due to glazed contacts. Clean them, charged it and it was OK! Down the road the thing finally started acting whacko on me, I contacted Garmin on two occasions they replaced the 550. After getting the second one a few months later it started acting up again. Each time I sent it in I had to wait about a month to get it back, so this time I said screw it. So I took it apart to check it out, don't recall why, but I determined it had to do with the touch screen. So I went on EBay a bought a screen, and learn an interesting thing, upon assembly. There is a string like gasket that goes on under the front cover and to the touch screen. Upon tightening the cover screws, if that gasket is not in its proper position, it will put pressure on the screen and make the unit go crazy. I also noticed that after tightening the unit and the pressure is too much on one side, it also put pressure on the screen. Pressure on the screen is like touching it. Just my opinion, but I think in many cases the issue is the touch screen shifting. So point is, if you take you finger and pressing on the screen, and while doing that you try to do something else, the unit will freeze, so if the gasket is putting abnormal pressure on the screen, the unit may not work for other things. Also make sure your battery is charged. Sorry for being long winded, any way my 550 is still working OK!

Yes it does, I have it hooked up to an acc spot on the fuse panel of a Goldwing. I have one GPS, but have 2 cradles one on the Valkyrie and another on the Goldwing so I can just move it from bike to bike. On the Valk, I just plug into a cigarette style plug that is wire direct to the battery.

Yes that is correct, mine does the same, once bike power is turned OFF, the Zumo asks if you want to shut down or run on battery. I had this installed when I was doing some work and was turning the key on and off several times, sometimes close together. 2 times I forgot to tell it to power down. When I was done and turned on the bike again is when I noticed the Zumo was not booting up. I should have taken it power cradle when I started.

Does your 450 use an SD card? If so, did you try to remove the SD card and try to reboot / reset procedures and also remove the battery for perhaps 10 minutes and replace?
After all that reinstall the SD card.
Good Luck !

well Saturday 8/13 my GPS unit was shipped out for repair and I received a message today my unit was at their location for repair. A couple hours later I got a phone call from the owner and said my unit was done and ready to go. he explained to me it was an issue with what they call Sudden Death Syndrome which was an issue with the Zumo 450 and 550 series. I did pay the $5.00 for a rush service so I can't say what a non rush timeline would be but my unit should be back to me before the end of the week.
The owner Chris was a pleasure to speak to, I spoke to him Friday night before I shipped the unit and he took the time to listen as well as explain what they do.
I think his prices were reasonable considering the alternative to buying a new modern unit.

Mike, it seems like you made a good choice for a repair company. They did all the right stuff as far as keeping the communication lines open, the fast turnaround, etc. I don't know what their standard charge was, but businesses have to keep the doors open. Eveyou got n if your unit only needed some sort of simplistic factory reset or similar, most companies would have a minimum charge just to open up the unit. Sounds like a good deal.

I paid $84.00 total, which began with their standard bench rate of $29.00. The sudden death issue cost $20.00 I also had them install a new internal back up battery @ $12.00 as well as the rubber button service for $18.00. As I haven't gotten the unit back yet I can't say how well it will hold up, but if the reports from the Zumo web forum are as accurate as their info was about the owner, I would think it should hold up for a few more years.
