Hip, that is. Hip, hip, hooray....pun intended. Most of you have been aware that I've had this battle for some time, going on 3 yrs. now since it really flared up. Until now, the prior drs. told me I didn't qualify for bolting in a new one, and gave various reasons as to why. All they wanted to do was give me shots, which only gave me 10 days relief at the most. So, I quit going back and figured sooner or later things would change enough. Now it has. I looked at the xrays with the dr. today, the left side is nice and smooth with plenty of cartilage. The right side has enough arthritis(arthur) and so rough it looks like a photo of the Grand Tetons(do you know what Tetons is in French?). The dr. came in, sat down, asked about prior treatments and I told him about all the shots. He then said "we're not going to mess with shots this time, just look at this" and showed me the xray. He said we'll just replace it and be done with it so you can get back to a normal life. Wasn't five minutes into the meeting and he said I don't know why it was put off for so long. I shared some of my experience with him, he just shook his head and reassured me "no more." I had researched the Orlando area for a dr. that did the anterior approach to replacement. His name came up and his personal profile indicated he's been using it for the last 10 years, which he confirmed today. Plus, this dr. also instructs on that procedure so I figured that's the guy I want ferreting around inside my joints. For those unfamiliar with it, the anterior method is done more to the front, has a 4-5" incision, and they don't cut any muscles or tendons. As apposed to the former method towards the rear, the cutting of large muscles, etc., is the mains source of the long rehab of a few months. A professor at Valencia College was back playing golf in under 3 weeks after having the anterior procedure. So, Dr. Bonenberger is the new doctor. He's a big guy, at least 6'3" or more, big booming voice and a rather "bold" sense of humor. Will be done at the Dr. Phillips Hospital in SW Orlando, all the rehab will be done at the house. My daughter, Toni, will be coming down to help out, going to try and get it put off until no sooner than Sept. 12, which is the week her youngest daughter starts back to school. Her oldest daughter is 24 and works at a bank full time so will help out in the morning. She finished college last year but Toni told her to store her stuff and stay at home until she saves enough to get on her own, buy a house, or whatever she decides. When I told Toni she didn't need to come down, she told me that my "mama bear" daughter is coming down to handle things. I learned a long time ago not to argue with that one. I'm apprehensive but really looking forward to some permanent relief. It should be cool enough to ride again by the time I can get back out there.

I had one replaced in 2002 and the other 3yrs ago. They put me off at first too because "I was too young". They didn't want me to wear the new one out. The second one was so much easier. The procedure had improved a lot, the prep was easier. I knew what physical therapy had to be done so I didn't have to go in every day. Bottom line, hip replacement is an every day thing for the doctors and recovery is shorter. Getting on the bike isn't too bad, just don't twist too far. Don't get hooked on pain killers either. Good luck!!

Well, I'm definitely not too young at 78. I hope I live long enough to wear it out....or at least down a bit. I had to chuckle at the dr., all the others walked around in those drab white coats. This dude walks in and has the loudest, brightest plaid polo shirt I've seen in a long time, which went well with his slacks and sandals....not shoes. I plan to have a picture taken of Rita and me with our walkers. That should be a classic. I wonder if she'll let me borrow hers once in a while, it has four wheels, brakes, a seat, storage compartment. Mine looks something like this, only smaller wheels and only in front. Wheels in front and skids in back. I do have some suspenders that almost look like that, maybe I'll attach them to my briefs and pull them up a bit. Add a little class to the the picture.

Good deal John. Don't let them talk into getting the one with a kick stand.

Good deal John. Don't let them talk into getting the one with a kick stand. Jess, Rita would probably like that model. Then she could kick it out from under me when deemed necessary. She already told me "I'm going to knock the piss outa you" a couple days ago when I popped a plastic bag behind her. She then added I'd have to go sit down so she could do it. So I picked up all 92 lbs. of her and asked where and when. All this from a gal that's so weak many days that she can't press the button on top of a spray can of canola oil for cooking. Gotta love her attitude.

I'm sorry for both of you John.
At least she (and you) have the upbeat spirit, which can be everything.

Please don't Jess. We laugh and love together, a day at a time. Sure, things could be better but....they also could be worse, a lot worse. When we were first married we traveled a lot, saw some fantastic stuff right here in North America. Even went back and revisited a number of places because we had such a great time there together. Also traveled on the '92 Wing we had back then and towed a matching trailer, covered a lot of miles on it together. We have loads of memories and photos that we pull out from time to time. It all comes to an end one day for everybody, enjoy it while you can. We did.

So, going aftermarket or staying with an OEM manufacturer?

So, going aftermarket or staying with an OEM manufacturer? Guess I'll have to go with aftermarket since OEM parts are hard to come by these days. At least now I'll be able to bug the TSA legally. Just wondering....can it be magnetized? Wouldn't that be a kick....walk into a room with a bolt stuck to your side. Sure would be easy to keep track of your car keys, just hang them on the bolt.
