I get helmet itch real bad with any of my helmets and after Kingbee went down recently and his helmet saved his life I need to find something to cure that pesty helmet itch so I can wear my helmets once again. I have tried the slik head cap, scalp itch products at stores, using no products on hair after washing and rince acouple of times, everything but yet I still get it and drives me bonkers. So who else gets it and what have ya done to cure it if anything. I find if I soak my head with water and put a cooling bandana on it helps some for awhile but only till the next gas stop and then have to refresh the head cooler rag. Gotta be something out there to get rid of that pesty itch.

I've never found anything that worked for helmet itch. Luckily I don't get it often. I tend to only get itch when I'm on long rides anyway. Good luck with that.

Terry,
Similar to me riding without a helmet. When I stop and get off my scalp keeps crawling for 20 minutes from my hair in the wind. I imagine that would go away after I got used to it. But I won't 'cause I'm going to keep wearing my helmet!
In case it's bacteria related from a dirty helmet try giving it a soaking spray of Lysol and let it dry. It'll smell fresh too for a while.
If that solves your problem then it's time to take a few drops of laundry detergent and warm water and scrub, blot, moisten, blot, repeat. When dry hit it again with the Lysol.
It could also be an allergic reaction to the chemicals integral to manufacturing - I hope not...
BTW: Walt and his family & friends appreciate all your help.

I used to get it bad. I figured it was because the helmet was moving my hair. Wearing a DO-RAG helped mine a lot! (I don't wear one because I think it looks cool) They make fancy silk head covers too, but I've never tried one of those.

You might want to try a skull cap. My wife had the same problem and I read a article in Motorcycle Consumer News which talked about using the skull cap to prevent itch. I bought one called a "Silk" for the wife and it solved the problem plus it kept her hair from messing up so bad (which every man knows is of vital importance). Like Mastercard, She never left home without it!

If they have removable liners, try taking them out and throwing 'em in the washing machine.

The only thing I have found that helps are the helmet liners or do rags.

My opinion only;
Cheap helmets = itch
Good helmets = no itch
My Fulmer itched like crazy, as did other lower cost helmets. since I bought an Aria, the itch is gone.

I think the quality of the helmet is one factor and helmet hygiene is another.I do not get helmet itch and I have all kinds of hair.

I started to use baby shampoo during the riding season. Shampoo hair and rinse well and rinse hair again before i get out of the shower. No creme rinse. This has helped better then anything else.

Ah yes, the dreaded helmet crabs. I'm alright but Kit gets it bad. Another reason she hates the helmet. She has short hair and it still itches. Guess its something you deal with.

You may be having a reaction to the glue used in your helmet. Might wanna try a different brand and see if it gets any better.

I get it too. What I do is mash down on the top of my helmet and wiggle it back and forth real fast.
Don't laugh, it works!

Hey thanks for all the advice much appreciated. I think I will wash the liner in some non allergy type solution and see if that works. I have had brand new helmets that drive me nuts from the get go and I wash my hair twice and add no extra things to it. Like I said if I put water on it then put on the helmet it is ok for awhile. Must be something in the liner itself so I will go for that now. Thanks for all the comments, very funny and interesting to say the least and helpful too. If I find a cure I am going to market it and let ya know.
Yes I like to ride without one most times but in Chicago area the drivers are crazy and having one on makes me feel alot better. But I have seen some nasty crashes out in the country and after seeing a friend crash lately I need to re-think my wearing of a helmet as I don't think he would have survived his crash if not for his helmet. Really gets ya thinking about that.
Thanks again!

And many people are alergic to it. Some other man made fibers cause similar reactions.. Putting on a doo rag or water may help for awhile... check carefully on what material is used in the helmet.... Sometimes it's just persperation... Get a helmet with better ventilation... This is information provided by my doctor and several helmet companies... Short hair or long doesn't seem to matter.. I have done both......
