Swapping Out Rear Fender Rails

Gang:

For those of you who've had to remove the rear fender rails on a Standard/Tourer- either to add an I/S trunk or install a pair of the aftermarket Cobra rails - am I correct in assuming the upper rear shock stud must be removed? 

This appears to be the front-most location where the rails are attached to the frame - and it looks like a bear to break loose.  I wasn't able to locate this schematic on the fiche, so I have no idea what type of fasteners are even involved.

Any words of wisdom (or confessions based on experience)?

Yes the shock mount has to come out. Do one side at a time because the fender bolts are easier to line up when the other side is in place.

They just screw out but might be rather snug since they've been there since the bike was built. And as suggested, do one side at a time. If you take everything apart first, you'll lose your religion trying to get all the bolts started again.

I completed the task this morning. Overall, it wasn't even close to the hardest things I've done.

It did take a little mass to break lose the upper shock studs; (un)fortunately, I'm amply equipped.
