So I ran my gas down about as low as I've ever run it today, about 10 miles past where the first bar on the fuel gauge was blinking. The tank supposedly holds six gallons, but the absolute most I could squeeze into it was 4.9, which means with the gauge figuratively bouncing off E, there was still over a gallon left in there. What's everybody else's experience been?

Incidentally, I went just over 215 miles on that tank, giving me just under 44 mpg -- is it safe to assume I had at least another 40 miles to go?

You can go 260mi. (before you gotta push) if you fill the tank to the max.
I have a center stand and always use it when fueling.
Take your time, fill the neck, and enjoy the extra miles.  cooldude

I believe almost all fuel gauges are inaccurate in M/C's and cars/trucks. They all do something weird when near empty but I rather have it have another gallon when supposed to be near empty. I begin to panic when the last line starts to blink only to find out I could go another 40 miles, that's better than pushing....I mean waiting for someone to bring me gas.

This is the 1800 board for the 14 and up Valkyrie NOT for the 1500 Valkyrie.

Definitely true -- I'd much rather have more left than is indicated than less. Now that I think of it, my car is the same way -- gauge flashes and the computer says I have no miles left, but there's still over a gallon in the tank before I fill it. I was just wondering if this was consistent among other '14-'15 Valks.

Well I usually reach 39.2 MPG, sometimes 33.6 MPG but never 26.14 MPG or even 23.52 MPG as the GW taxis in Paris do (so they run on ethanol). Yesterday the last bar was blinking but I thought it was OK (I count 18 or 24 mi. then). On the highway, I realized IT WAS NOT OK  Evil and fortunately I found an exit before the complete stop. 213 mi. on the clock !
I found  a driver to help me, drive me to the gas station and bring me back.  angel

The best I have got was 405k (251m) before it started blinking. I use 95 mostly, sometimes 98, 91 if I don't have a choice and I would be in a bad place to use ethanol.

I find it a pain in the butt to max fill it as I never know exactly when it is completely full. It seems I can keep brimming it and it will settle, put more in, settle, then have fuel coming out the overflow under the bike. We can't sit on the bike to fill here and I don't have a center stand fyi.

As for the accuracy of the gauge I think the only thing you can rely on is when it has full bars and you have just filled up it is pretty full and when it starts to blink then perhaps you may want to fuel up at your next convenience.

Like all fuel gauges I have had experience with in my life they seems to be not much more useful then an idiot light.

So, according to the manual, when the last segment starts blinking you have 1.3 gallons of the 6 left. So I average 38MPG, so 1.3x38=49.4, I figure that once the segment blinks I have 40 miles max, gives me 9.4 miles for accuracy.

Duh. I didn't even think to check the manual for that. That would have clearly answered my question.

Heh read the manual, who would have thought of that? 1.3 gallons comes to 4.9 liters or thereabouts. That is in fact quite a bit of gas and quite a bit of range.

Just for the sake of interest when I ride with my mate who has a 1300 Honda Fury we use almost identical amounts of fuel. I fill up when he does because I got nothing better to do and it is close enough to being the same.

He does only have a 12.8 litter tank tho so I do have a standing offer to sell him fuel at $400 a liter if he gets stuck in the middle of nowhere. Hey sellers market Cheesy

I neglected to pay proper attention to my flashing light once when
I'd not had the bike long. I got about 23x miles. I don't pack in the
fuel when filling like I do on the 1500... supposedly that's bad on
these FI pressurized gas line bikes...

Any information on why that would be bad? I know it pours out the overflow if you go too far and I figure it could suck in air just as fast so I am curious as to the reason for this line of thinking.

I think I read a line warning about overfilling in the owner's manual. I just googled this up:

Yep, mike is correct.

On my wife's Can Am Spyder, if you over fill the tank then the excess fuel can go into the charcoal canister for the fuel vapor emission.  Once it is wet then you will get a constant fuel smell from the bike.  I guess our bikes don't have that feature.

Some cars say the same thing, my Smart Car Brabus does anyway, claiming it will damage something, near the filler says "do not top off".

Ahhh ok thanks for the info but I gather I don't have that to worry about. Apart from a puddle of fuel under the bike there is no running issues at all. I expect we have nothing like the stuff required in California.

I rode 212 miles one day and then the last bar left and the gauge started blinking..I reset the odometer at that point and I knew how far I was from home...I rode 20 more miles, so now I rode 232 miles....I rode to my neighborhood Shell station, 232 miles...I then pumped in 5.1 gallons!! I still had 1 gallon left....I did this twice, I could have rode 250 miles easy with this bike and not worried..Of course I wouldn't do this on a long road trip!! Grin
