Hi all, I thought I found the perfect bike a beautiful 98 valkyrie touring. 48k miles black and chrome, polished Forks, new tires just serviced etc.
Just finished an 800 mile trip of southern Colorado in three days. Not once did I not want to get back on that bike.
Now it has 53k and the final drive is trash.
From what I have been told it cannot be repaired and used parts are not available.
I would like to part it out to recover some of my money but don't want to get stuck with the leftovers.
Should I take it to a salvage yard and just cut my loss.
I've looked at the classifieds and it seems I could unload most of it but.............
How come no one rebuilds these Drives?
I would love to keep it. Is there an option?
Are people really just Junkind these bikes?
Help!

It can surely be rebuilt (final drive) and all the (oem) parts are available. I can't remember how much it cost, maybe around $250 for parts.

Ricky's right you can just rebuild what you have. Another option is to watch eBay. I don't see any at the moment but they're found there regularly. Here's the recently completed listings that will let you see what they're going for.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=16&_nkw=valkyrie%20final%20drive&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684

The problem with used is that you must know what you're looking at to determine the wear that's present. When properly maintained the final drive can last practically forever. However, if ignored, it's only a matter of time.

First of all, where are you located?
When you say that the Final Drive is toast, has someone else told you that or us this your observation?
Do you know which parts are bad and do you have pictures of the worn parts?
This is not a big problem. Used units can be found and knowledgeable people can use parts off of a Goldwing 1500 Final Drive to fix yours.
First we need to know exactly what is 'toast'.
If you like the bike, do not part it out!

With that little of miles I would bet only the pinion cup and drive shaft are bad. These are still obtainable through several suppliers. Get someone close to you that knows valks inspect it. You could only have about 100 bucks worth of parts bad. And yes they can be rebuilt with goldwing final drive guts.

Well you asked the right group for answers. Yes they are rebuild able. Parts can be bought new. 1500 wing rear parts are interchangeable too. If nobody local can do it, ship it to BigBF or Western Honda in Scottsdale, AZ. Their mechanic can do it and the labor isn't much.

You've gotten all the replies you need. Post the pictures and more information of what it is that is wrong.

You can buy used rears, but they are a lot. Most parts can be bought. Are you capable of doing the work yourself, or need someone to do it for you?

Add your location into your profile. You might get someone local who can help you out.

You can change out the final drive with goldwing parts or a donor Valkyrie or even rebuilding it is another option. You can do it yourself using this site's shoptalk menus option. And all can be done in a few hours, depending on how many beers you consume.

They don't have any listed at the moment, but this is a viable option.

I've begun to lay in tools and spares to rebuild them (if needed) but I regularly service the final drives and driveshafts of both of my Valkyries. Fingers crossed that they'll go a long time.

Definitely don't part it out for that.  See if you can find a trike shop with a final or post on the general board that you need one.

Post your location and pictures of the unit if you have them.

Anyone who thinks there are parts that are interchangeable between the Goldwing final drive and the Valkyrie final drive are sadly misinformed. There is but a single item that can be used, that is common to both, and that part has to be pressed out of the Goldwing gear and then pressed into the Valkyrie gear.

That is correct and that is what we are talking about, replacing worn splines.

I thought we were talking about just slapping a 1500 goldwing final drive on and taking off.  Evil

The housings are different and the GW 1500 drive won't mate up to the Valk swing arm.  Inside, the ring gear and pinion are different.  As Ricky stated, you can use the spline cup, but it has to be pressed out of the GW ring gear and pressed into the Valk ring gear.

I faced a similar decision when my I/S final drive went kaput.

Found a used but in good state final drive for 230 bucks (including shipping) in Ebay and the bike is back in the road.

It may take a little while to find the part, but if you want, you can fix it.

Looking at your profile , I would guess maybe towards the west coast. I am sure there are one or two members there.
Walgreens had a saying , never more than 14 minutes from a store.
The VRCC is similar , but there may be 15 minutes between members. Just ask for help , it is available.

Ricky, actually the only parts that will not interchange are the main housing, the ring and pinion (except for the drive splines that get pressed out), and  the small bearing for the pinion snout. That leaves a lot of parts that will interchange. Bolts, bearings,  pinion cup,  gear case cover, dust guard plate, distance collar and breather cap. I have done a number of drive spline swaps.

I would totally not part out my Valkyrie for a final drive issue.  In 2004 I traded my 1998 C model.  That was the worst motorcycle related decision I have ever made.  After that I had one Suzuki and two big twin Harleys.  None of them came close to the Valkyrie for owner satisfaction.  When I get rid of this bike I will get a 1800 Goldwing but, that's years from now.  Or, maybe never.
