Got my rear end service all done and was looking over the bike and found this...gassy or oily substance on the tubes going under the tank. Im guessing it's time to do a desmog? I've always wondered if I'm lacking a bit of power. I read about other guys pulling the front tire off and, while I can lay a black strip through first on the smooth pavement, I've never felt like I've been close to having the front end come up. Mind you I'm talking throttle only, not clutch assisted. I'm guessing this apparent leak would result in a loss of a bit of power?

I just did a desmog. I can tell you that i dont pull the tire up or burn the tire off. I did however get some better fuel mileage. I was able to run an additional 40 miles to reserved on the first 3 tanks.

Do you have to remove the exhaust to do the desmog? Just wondering what I need to order on top of the red eye kit.

I've had the front off the ground by an inch or two a couple three times. But only with my Standard and only with a car tire. My Interstate has never come close. I'm not really seeing the oiliness on the tubes. But pics can be deceiving. Personally I see no reason not to do a desmog. But I don't think it adds any more power and I notice no improvement in mileage.

The rubber hose on the tube going to the check valve(I think) is covered in an oily substance and dirt. Part of the tube too. You can see in the second pic where I wiped some off with my finger.

Ok I think I see what you mean I'm not sure why it's on there. But knowing you have long winter coming up. I would do a desmog. If it was me I would also put on a DanMarc at the same time.

I think I have the same residue on the same vacuum hoses. I had planned to do a desmog over the winter anyway. DanMarc...I am pretty good about remembering to turn off the Pingel petcock, so I am good there. Good luck.

If a leak on that side of the valves would not affect performance, it might not be worth the hassle. My hoses are otherwise in good shape, bike has been garaged since new.
I'm a little worried about tampering with the factory smog equipment if I don't have to with our current Liberal government in power. I have a feeling they'll Californicate our emissions regulations here and not allow any tampering...or just force us all to drive Priuses.
Anyone who understands all the valves better than I know if these leaks here will cause any performance issues?

If they Californicate you It won't pass emissions the way it is. It will only pass emissions for the time it was made.

" Do you have to remove the exhaust to do the desmog? " .... no need to remove exhaust you will have to remove gas tank and air box .... red eye shiney kit no increase in power ... less air leaks
