Looking for feedback.  When I purchased the bike it had 150km.  I listened to 2 other 1800 engines (bikes) and they all ticked.  My bike ticked the least, however, I recently downshifted by accident instead of upshifting (big feet and sensitive shifter) - bike locked up rear tire until revs were in range.  Now my valves tick louder.  Any chance I caused some damage?  I was accelerating instead of coming off of high speed.  I have to think there are fail safes in the bike as I am sure I am not the only one who has done this.  Feedback welcome.  I am going to purchase a heel/toe shifter to help out.

You probably just totally screwed up the engine.   Shocked

Just kidding, there more than likely no damage at all. If there is a problem more than likely its covered under warranty. Just monitor it for awhile and see, Mine comes and goes, most of the time its not there but every once in a while I hear it. These bikes can take a lot without a problem. Heck thats why Goldwings have been around for a while and pretty trouble free. This means they have had many miles to iron out any problems in the drive train just so there is no problem.

I hear my valves tick off and on as well. Mostly upon start-up when the motor is cold and the oil needs to warm up. I've become used to the sound and usually wait until the ticking subsides before I start riding.

Our bike's stock exhaust is so quiet that its a bit strange to engine noise and the whir. You might also be listening harder due to fear of messing the engine up with your downshift, but realistically the tire locking is the best case scenario on a high RPM downshift. The tire gripping and throwing ungodly amounts of torque/pressure onto the transmission/crankshift while over speeding the engine is the nightmare scenario.

Two things:

1. You could be just hearing the fuel injectors.  Listen to any car engine with FI...They all do it.
2. My valves tick only slightly at start up...and then only for 2 seconds or so.  However, by taking the bike off it's kickstand...standing it up right at start up minimizes the noise AND duration of it to almost zero.

Also, USE SYNTHETIC oil!  This eliminates nearly all mechanical engine noise. Your engine will LOVE you for it.  Faster, smoother...etc.

Don't listen to ANYONE who says it doesn't make a difference.  Their bald faced ignoramuses!

I think I may have the answer to the tick and it has nothing to do with valves. Its a valve that removes the fuel tank fumes into the engine and the way it works is opening and closing at a certain frequency to allow the vacuum from the manifold to suck in and burn the fumes. Its opening and closing is similar to an injector but slower and louder and it wouldn't come on all the time only occasionally. Its located on the front of the bike under the front upper cover next to the coils and easily heard.

Rode my bike this am to store. Checked for clicking sounds. Nothin!! Just the signature Goldwing wine. Nothing after ride and warmed up either. Fuel pump at startup that's it. I do have a very light rumble in neutral at idle but subsides when clutch depressed.

Red or white ?

I heard the ticking long ago and my first response  was to " run like hell "
Then  , my wife calmed me down and told me "this ain't  Iraq, stupid  "
