The Supreme Court will consider the case of an 8ft (2.5m) high Christian cross in the Mojave National Preserve, in California, which was put up as a monument to fallen World War I soldiers 70 years ago.

In 2003, a federal court ruled that because the cross stood on public ground, its presence violated a constitutional ban on the government endorsing one religion over another.

Congress tried to end the dispute by transferring the land to private ownership. But an appeals court ruled that the congressional action did not end the case.

The Supreme Court will look at whether the transfer of the land resolved the issue of the separation of church and state. It will also rule on whether the original plaintiff, a retired park service worker from Oregon, is entitled to bring the case.

The US Park Service has been forced to cover up the cross while the First Amendment legal arguments continue.

I think both sides tend to go to extremes but I am glad we live in a country that has a mechanism for resolution other than the gun.

Back home in Mountain City, GA when I was a youngster, there was a large lighted Cross on top of Black Rock Mountain State Park(highest State park in GA)....someone complained and it was either taken down or switched off.....seperation of Church and State....ok, understandable.....but I read a few months ago that a private  group had erected it back on a private piece of land.....seems it only takes just a couple of folks to ruin it for everyone....

The other night I heard a coyote in the yard yelping at an owl. I was telling Dad about it. He says they've been reintroduced into our area. I've been in my area for 30 years and never knew we had ever had coyotes or that any were missing.

Now that's tax dollars at work. Sticking coyotes into their habitat after their habitat has been housing developmented away.  Tax dollars is about to eat stray cats and dogs. Tax dollars will then have to deal with people calling to report coyotes in the yard and animal control coming out. Seems like a vicious cycle of tax dollars.

Next year, when you enter the voting booth, determine who the incumbent is--and vote for the other guy. And this is nonpartisan. Vote all of them out from Senators to Congressman to your local dog catcher.

actually the dog catchers are part of the sheriff department around here. Small county force. And they are trying to boot out the sheriff at the moment. The Democrats want him gone, but they can't agree on who gets to assign his replacement until the next election so they've left him there. They just fired one of his right-hand men, who in turn is going public to blame his boss in the investigation.

They're working on that.
