John went in to have some surgery he was supposed to have had about a month ago. We should be hearing from him soon. We have a get well thread going over in the Florida section. Head on over and let him know you are thinking of him.

OK Dennis, here I be. Was supposed to have the ball suspension installed end of October but....always a but isn't there! The one and only time I've ever tripped in the garage took place the week prior and I went down hard on the cement floor. Jammed the wrist quite bad, thought I'd broken something for sure. Turns out I didn't but per the dr....."you sir, missed a good chance." Hand swelled up nearly 2" thick and halfway up the forearm. So, this past Wednesday, 11/30, I finally was admitted for surgery to replace parts no longer under warranty or serviceable. The dr. used what's known as the anterior approach, left me with a 4 1/2" slice near the top of the right thigh. Took him less than an hour, no muscles or ligaments cut. They agreed to keep me an extra night since I have no help at home, so came home this afternoon....Saturday. I can walk without any tools but use a 4 wheel walker for safety sake for the next few days. Unlike the older method which has restrictions on leg positions, with the method used on me there are none due to no muscles/ligaments being cut. They make the cut and spread the muscles out of the way. Leg is still a little swollen but the results are great so far.  cooldude

Sounds encouraging.  Good to hear you're already up and walking.  I like that kind of joint replacement.  Hope I never need one.

Now about that going in at the top of the thigh and spreading the muscles.  Did you tell them to be careful to stay away from your head?  Wink

Funny you should mention that. Before I went to lala land I was joking with the dr., told him no "whoopsies" allowed. He has a big booming voice and a laugh to match....that's the last thing I recall. Next morning when he stopped in, he joked about it, maintained it was "textbook" and no extra maintenance/repairs were necessary. He then pulled out this flesh colored balloon and asked if I want it stuffed in my overnight bag. We had a good chuckle over it and the little nurse standing there went technicolor.  2funny

I know I'm not the first on here to undergo surgery, but I just want everyone to know the notes and humor are quite welcome. Thanks to everyone. Now, only one problem exists....has to do with the effect pain killers have on the digestive tract.  Roll Eyes

Best thing I can think of is to get off the pain meds  as soon as practical - narcotics do that (unfortunately). But don't make yourself miserable - there is a reason the doc prescribed them.

Stool softeners are your friend. (At least for a little while)
A few years back I had a herniated disc that was excruciating. The only thing that helped was Dilaudin. I had never experienced the side effects before and was shocked at the effect they had.

Stool softner is a pillow.

They only give me stomach cramps (same with a glass of sand... Metamucil), and still no movement.  Constipation is bad enough; constipation with stomach cramps is worse.

Best thing for me is a whole can of Campbells split pea soup (and pound water down).

A little walk is good too (if you can), but don't get too far from home.
