’99 Valk Standard

A couple of months ago my speedo quit.  Turned out to be a bad cable (froze up in the casing).
I replaced that and all was well, for awhile.

Now the speedo will not go above 25mph. I surmise the “froze cable” did a number on the gears at the wheel (I disconnected the cable at the wheel and spun it with a drill and the speedo worked fine).

The Honda parts guy said there is a plastic replaceable gear available for $15 or the whole speedo gear housing for $85.

Has anyone had experience with this?

I have replace several of  the nylon gears. It seems to me that very few people service this speed o drive and it usually fails due to lack of service. Normally you clean the speed o drive replace the nylon gear and lube. it is then good for many years to come.

Go for the $15 cure. That's all you need. When you remove the plastic gear, look for 1 or 2 shims under the gear. Be sure to replace them. Lube the gear with a wheel bearing grease.

We are talking the non- IS models here? The IS uses a digital box, doesn't it?

Yes but it uses the same drive gear to run the digital box

I make cleaning and regreasing the speedometer gearing part of the maintenance plan when I replace the front tire.  So far, it's worked.

Great!  Thanks for all, or most, of the comments (not sure why Jess won't touch it, maybe there's a fetish about speedos...).

I'm sure that's a good idea, first time I've heard of any maintenance on this, but since the cable froze up and couldn't spin AT ALL would regreasing the gears prevent them from ruining in this scenario?

I thought, because you released the cable from the gear and then were able to turn the speedo, the gear was the cause of the failure.  Then I realized you're talking about the new cable.  To answer your question, no, greasing the gears will not prevent damage to the gear from a frozen cable.

What caused the cable to freeze up in the first place?  Non use? Moisture? Cable split?  All of the above?

Thanks for the answer.

Probably, yes - all of the above, even, unfortunately, non use. (always seems to be something needing to be done)

When I pulled the old one off I couldn't even turn it with a pair of pliers.
Didn't have a problem that I could tell up till it quit. Could've been failing for a while though, I guess.
