One winter project for my NTM 99 IS is to remove the trunk.  I can't do a traditional Supervalk conversion on it, though, because I ride my boy (10) to school when the weather's nice, and Mom insists on a sissy bar.  OTOH, I'd like to be able to reinstall the trunk easily for road trips (maybe 1-2 a year).

I've got a full sissybar setup (fender rails, brackets, backrest, rack) in hand.  Given the differences in fender rails, is it even possible to do a quick-swap mod to allow switching between the sissy bar and trunk?

I think you would have to fab a bracket to do what you are wanting to do.

Yup, cooldude

#13 & 14 on a Standard or Tourer, Interstates don't have them and they would be in the way of the trunk.

When I did my Super Valk, I just slotted the bar on the Interstate trunk so it would be easy to put on or take off. I also slotted the bar on the backrest, luggage rack so I could just take off the trunk and put on the backrest/luggage rack.  I just loosen the bolts on the rail and put on either the trunk or the backrest. I bought the backrest/luggage rack at one of the Inzane rallies, and all that had to be done was slot the holes so it would be easy to put on or take off. I have another seat that I can just take off the trunk and have no backrest/luggage rack, and no trunk.

Gary, that sounds like the ideal setup.  Which fender rails are you using - the original IS rails, or the Standard rails?  Also, is yours the Honda backrest, or aftermarket?

If it's possible to use the Standard rails with the IS trunk, and slot the backrest brackets as a quick release, that sounds like the ticket.

On my Interstate I have the Standard grab rails.  I've had welded forwards tabs to take the front of the Interstate trunk mounts.  I drilled holes in the backrest mount to accommodate the rear trunk mount bolts.  I trimmed down the backrest bracket so it would not interfere with the trunk mount.  That required that I use the bottom hole of the backrest bracket as the top hole for the backrest.  The bottom hole of the backrest is accommodated by the hole fro the rear bolt of the trunk mount.

It goes easily and quickly either way.  The backrest does sit slightly lower actually contacting the pillion pad but it is there and works fine.
