The last bike I put metal stems in (Jake Wilson's) I installed parallel to the rim. That is if the stem is in the 9:00 position , it points to the ground. I tried with three different inflator chucks including the type used at service stations and had no trouble filling them. This helps eliminate centrifical force on the stem. It is a minor issue , but when I do the winter service in my Valk , I will turn the stems.
When the owner was at my shop , I showed him his oem stems starting to crack. He said he would do them over the winter. He pulled on one and it started leaking. I changed both stems in about 20 minutes with the tool I made. Those that asked me to make the clamp , I have not forgot. I haven't found the right clamps yet.

Not a political post, ay?  Everyone knows the 9:00 o' clock position is far left.

I will have to take pictures and post them. When we were in Morgantown , Woton and biker girl along with old2soon changed a stem for Ted (do not know his handle or last name). I was sick and talked them thru. We didn't have a jack , and had to make due with what we had. I can change stems in about 15 minutes.

Change stems without unbeading the tire? I am subscribed to this thread with interest.

The tire bead is broken , it is just that the tire is not removed from the bike. At the shop I just pick it up , deflate the tire and use the breaker to collapse the tire on one side , change the stem . lube the tire and re-inflate.

Oh Ok. What do you use to break the bead on the bike? Or is that the tool we're discussing?

Last FCR the guy who owned the now closed shop on the main drag in Robbinsville did my rear stem in about 20 minutes with hard bags and wheel on the bike.

Bike up on lift. Deflate tire.

He used a clamp to squeeze the tire and hey presto, easy peasy.

It was a car tire to boot.
