Out with the old...in with the wooohoooo!!!!

« on: January 08, 2017, 05:44:00 PM »

Hi guys,

I went crazy on my bike....again, but they are subtle changes.    coolsmiley

This weekend I changed my final drive oil, spark plugs (iridium), brake and clutch fluids and put Ride-On in my tires.  I had new rubber put on during the holidays.

Today was the day to work on it, because I may not get another chance until spring.  Too many other projects on the go.

As well as the above maintenance.  I told you guys that I painted my front forks a while ago and they look awesome.  I also got back my valve covers from the powder coaters on Friday.  Although, they didn't give me back the bands that say HONDA on them.  I will have to call them on Monday to see where they are.  The powder coating came out great.   cooldude

I also painted my side covers a couple of weeks ago and with everything done to the bike, it looks great.

Here are pictures of the finished product.

Also, I decided that my bike needed something to break up the black on the fenders and the tank, so I put on some carbon fibre racing stripes.  I wasn't sure that I would like it, but it turned out really nice.

My wife thinks I should put stripes on the top of the saddlebags as well.  I will get the stuff and put it on.  If it is too much then I will just remove it.

Excellent BRIAN!  I really like them!  Can I copy?  Really, I'm  serious

Also I have an extra set of the stock bands you can have as I don't need them, I can send you if they can't locate them.

Looks good ,  nice job , I wish I was as mechanically inclined as you , I  mean , I am really good at taking things apart , it's going back together that's a problem

I have one question , though , is the stripe  on the gas tank a little off center  ?

Jerry,

Copy all you want...it is the most sincere form of flattery.   :cool dude:

If they can't locate them, I will give you a shout.

Here is where I got the stripes:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/272346665652?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=571214981357&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Kidd,

It does look the way, but it is because of the shadow off the bezel.  I made sure that it was straight, or it would have bugged the heck out of me.   Cheesy

Hungyeye,

I like that name.

All of the changes are small but quickly add up to a fantastic looking machine! The stripes are especially good looking. Your package is going in the mail today so you can light those grills up. You'll need the extra visibility on your stealth Valkyrie.

Good work!

Thanks Dan,

I will await for the stuff to arrive in the mail.

Jerry,

They have the bands, but they told me that they cannot be powder coated because it is a plastic chrome and the powder coating will not stick.  I am going to try to paint them myself, but if they mess up bad I will get those ones off you.

Just make sure you rough it up so as to make a mechanical bond.  Maybe 320 grit.

I can't decide if I want to refer to an all black 1800 as a Murder Bike or a Stealth Bike. My wife says all black represents ninjas. We can't decide!

Murder'in the Chrome Degree?

I love the work to black out the ancillaries, but I've now decided that I cannot join the Murder/Stealth crew long term. A paint job is in order!

I have no idea when I would do it, but my neon green idea with racing stripe sounds too good to pass up since the all black look has been covered.

Dan,  I think a neon green color would be freaking awesome or maybe the Camaro green that they had in 2010

Hi Shrubbo,

I forgot to respond to your question.

The side covers were painted with Rustoleum Universal gloss black.  It has the primer + paint in one.  It is good for plastics and it is UV rated as well, so it won't fade in the sun.

paint used:
https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/universal/universal-gloss-spray-paint?ls=245196&lc=Gloss%20Black

For the forks, I used a black Epoxy primer made by Eastwood paints.  I covered the primer with their Rat Rod black satin paint.  If you paint over the primer within an hour of spraying the primer then you don't need to sand between them.  I liked that.

For the forks, you need to sand the powder coat with 150 grit and then with 320 grit to get a good mechanical bond.  Wash with TSP and let dry.

Primer used:
http://www.eastwood.com/2k-areospray-epoxy-primer-black.html

Paint used:
http://www.eastwood.com/2k-aerospray-rat-rod-satin-black.html?reltype=2&parent_id=47967

Both the paint and the primer are catalyzed.  The catalyst is located in a can inside the spray can.  There is a nub on the bottom of the can that when pressed in, breaks the top of the interior can to release the catalyst.  You shake it up for a couple of minutes and you are ready to paint.  You have 48hrs to use the can after the catalyst is released.
Also, I bought mine on eBay for a lot cheaper than the Eastwood site.
The spray tip on the can is awesome.  It sprays just like a professional spray gun and is easy to spray.  I am a complete novice when it comes to spray painting, but this stuff made me look like a professional.  The stuff also is almost run proof.  For the primer, a couple of light coats 15 mins apart and then a couple of heavier coats.  After the primer is sprayed, wait 15 mins and then go ahead with your paint.  Check out Youtube.  There are a few videos on it.

I actually bought 2 cans of their 2K catalyzed clear coat and I will be re-clear coating my saddlebags.  If they come out good then I will do my tank and fenders.  The paint on our bikes mark so easily, but this stuff is like rock after it cures.  It is good for water base clear coats like our bikes as well.

Clear coat:

Well, the last thing I want to do to my bike is paint the chrome trim on the valve covers to gloss black, or maybe a hammered black???

I sanded the chrome down and painted them with paint designed for plastic, but it did not adhere very well at all.  It peeled off with my finger nail pretty easily.

After doing some internet searches it was suggested to use Easy-Off grill cleaner to remove the chrome plating.  After the cleaner was sitting on it for a full day, only a few pieces of the chrome came off around the edges.  At this rate it would take me two weeks to fully get the chrome off.

I switched things up and found out that two parts hydrogen peroxide and one part muriatic acid will dissolve the chrome plating off the plastic AND not cause any harm to the plastic underneath.  The process apparently only takes about two hours to complete.  I am doing this tonight.   Cheesy

Once the chrome plating is off, then I can paint it with gloss black plastic paint to have a nice subtle accent.  I had thought of putting the carbon fibre wrap I have on it, but I doubt it would hold up to the heat from the valve covers.

Jerry,

If my trim gets destroyed from this process, I will be giving you a shout.   crazy2 crazy2

Bed liner comes in rattle can, it may give the hammered look and flat black. I once bought a nice BMW 1200RT that had been tpped on both sides, only leaving touchdown marks on bag front corners, I taped off a pattern and sprayed with bed liner, looked factory.

When painting plastic you need to use an adhesion promoter abefore applying a primer coat.

Once the chrome plating is off, then I can paint it with gloss black plastic paint to have a nice subtle accent.  I had thought of putting the carbon fibre wrap I have on it, but I doubt it would hold up to the heat from the valve covers.

Before painting any plastic you will want to use an adhesion promoter intended for plastic, then apply a coat of primer.

The paint that I am using has an adhesion promoter in it.  It also has the primer in it.  You are supposed to be able to just spray it on.  I tried it on a gas can and it stuck to it great.

Hungryeye,
I like your suggestion about the bed liner stuff.  I may do just that.   cooldude

Well holy sheep Sh!t,

It actually worked great.   cooldude cooldude

I put it in the solution and 1.5hrs later all the chrome was gone.  I washed it off with water for a while and now I am just waiting for it to totally dry.  I will then wash it again with soap and water and let dry again before I paint it.

Well... I decided to go with a hammered black, since it will be a nice contrast on the valve covers and I have a can of it here.   Grin

They came out to a nice charcoal colour with the hammered finish.  They look good on the bike, but I will have to wait until tomorrow to put them on permanently, since the paint is not fully hardened.

I may do something with the depressed 'HONDA' lettering sometime later.  Maybe go with a satin black to make it pop out a bit.

I was thinking of the bed liner like hungryeye suggested, but the can didn't say if it would adhere to plastic, and the guy at the store didn't know if it would, so I didn't want to take a chance.

Holy crap you just gave me the best idea ever! I bet I could get one of the upcoming electroluminescent paint shops to paint those strips and black out the HONDA letters. Imagine that thing lit up with black covers beside it. That would be ridicoulusly cool. Wire installation to light the paint would be a easy too!

Just have the wire come off the front of the trim, so that it will be behind the front cowl.  Unfortunately, there is no-one around me that does it.

I have the 2014 (red) maroon Valkyrie, love the color but it needed some accents to make it pop, so I took the side pods off and painted the mesh screen inside RED, I also painted the plastic strip on the valve covers RED, I made my own wind deflectors in a triangle shape and mounted them to the front forks,Also painted RED, when I mounted the running lights inside the lower front cowling, I put in mesh screening to protect them from stones,of course painted RED, I have RED dragon stickers on both side covers, and the smaller covers in front and lower of the main side covers I also painted RED, I have RED vinyl glued to the top of the OEM Honda bags, and when I mount the Viking travel trunk behind me for longer trips it also has the RED vinyl ontop. I have gold lettering on the back of the trunk that says VALKYRIE, and gold #s below the Valkyrie on the side covers that says 1832. Oh one more thing, I had a lettered wall plate the was made to hand dog leashes from that says WOOF, that yes I painted RED and velcroed to the top of the headlite. Why, because when I got the bike it was the biggest motor in our riding group, and what the big dog say,,, WOOF,,,,,, last of all below the license plat bracket I cut some red vinyl in the shape of a dragons  tounge that flaps in the wind. some of the guys laugh at things I have added, but I like it and I'm the one that rides it so thats my choice.  Now I'm waiting to get the valve covers, carb tubes and front belt covers, for my 1975 GL1000 back from the powder coat shop, guess what they will also be RED......I wish it was easier to post pictures to this site. I have trouble ever time I try.. Will have to get my Daughter to help again. in the mean time for anyone that wants to see pictures, e-mail me at blondie5052@gmail.com   and that I can do... waiting for spring, till then keep posting I love reading.

I have no idea when I would do it, but my neon green idea with racing stripe sounds too good to pass up since the all black look has been covered.

Hey Dan,

How about green chrome!!!

Check these guys out.

They can chrome anything, any colour.   cooldude

I would love black chrome.  They have some dealers up here as well in Toronto.
