I've got the tank and air box off already and have started to gather the parts for a desmog.
But I'm having second thoughts. The fresh air injection system is there for a reason, to help unburnt fuel in the exhaust to burn on the way out.
For those of you who have done so, is decel popping an issue?
Stock bike but exhaust piggies cut and first and second set of baffles cut.

I have had 4 Valks. I De Smogged all of them except the one I have now. I have had this one apart many times already and decided to leave it alone because this is probably the best running Valk out of all of them.

I am running long tube glass Packs and a K&N Filter and she runs like a scaled dog !! I can run the rpm's up to max and let off with perfect decel and no popping. So my motto is, why mess with it if it is running Great?  Grin

Removing smog stuff doesn't add HP. My recently purchased Valk was desmogged and it has a bit of popping. Still trying to sort that out.

I desmogged my bike. I helped Stanley Steamer replace his vacuum lines
with the Red Eye kit.

If I had to do it over, I wouldn't desmog, fixing any potential vacuum leaks
is easy.

I've desmogged six Valkyries so far.  All of them run great.

The money I've saved in rubber hose alone, is huge. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

It's all personal opinion/preference.

If you want the top of the motor cleaned up w/o all the plumbing there and don't want to deal with replacing hoses in the future, or potential vacuum leaks, that cause poor performance, than de-smog.

If you like leaving things as they are, then don't.

I've desmogged my 4 Valks.  Saved plenty on maintenance effort and cost.  Simple is better.  Cost me nothing to do it - you don't need any kit, you can fold over & crimp most of the pare tubes - the couple that are harder to reach, you can plug with JBWeld slathered over a right-sized inserted bolt. Cap all the opened vacuum nipples.  Done. Most backfires are caused by vacuum leaks and those are caused by cracked and leaking vacuum hoses.  If you don't feel like pulling the tank & airbox periodically and paying for new hoses - well it's a no-brainer. IMHO.

I had plenty of room for the Dan Marc fuel shut off after getting rid of all the smoggy stuff.  That in itself is a good reason to de-smog.

Hmm. I'm seriously starting to second guess. If it was reversible that would be a different matter.
What is required to remove the air pipes on the right side without destroying them? Removing the engine? Smiley

You can do what's called a "Stealth Desmog".  Nothing you do it permanent. All the chrome pipes are plugged with whatever works for you  and zipped tied together so they don't move around.

I used some of the rubber tube I removed, cut into 2-3" pieces, plugged the ends with JBWeld, put them on the pipes and done.

The carb intake pressure boost joints are capped with rubber hose with bolts in them.

You can resmog anytime you want.

Like MarkT stated, I've never spent any money de-smogging either, just used what I had hanging around and some JBWeld.

I have owned a 2000 NJ bike and a 1998 CA bike with all the smog on. The CA bike gets better mileage and runs better than the NJ bike did. I can see no reason to touch it.

I keep forgetting my 1st IS was a CA model, and I would get 189 miles to reserve on synthetic oil. My current IS gets 170, but has a 55 series CT on it. My other, haven't ridden more than one tank so far. Waiting for spring and a Auston TT.

FWIW I have everything I need to do a stealth desmog on my bike but haven't yet.  it runs great, and even though I've had the tank off a few times (e.g., to change the air filter), I haven't really had the ambition to desmog.  if I had a vacuum leak or if something else was off in terms of engine performance, that'd be the first thing I'd do at that point.  I've ridden the bike more than two years and almost 30k and so the desmog can wait, in my case.  Just my 1.5 cents.

It is nice to have it all out of the way if you put on a cruse control.

I have my carbs off for a good cleaning and rebuild.  Used the REdeye Shiny desmog kit and did it while its apart.  It does make more room for the cruise control and the Dan Marc

That was the first thing I did.  It was nice cleaning up that beautiful engine!  I have no popping in the exhaust.  That probably stems from a different problem than a desmog.

Mine runs like a Swiss watch......... coolsmiley

I did. A bit of a pain, mpg did not go up, zoom zoom did not go up
it DID idle better, removing any vacuum leaks, and preventing future ones
also NO popping in decel...man, I hated that
So, I'd do it again.
