Author Topic: Ignition switch relocation?  (Read 2136 times)

Almost finished sorting out the '02 fixer-upper I bought last month.

I don't like the stock ignition switch position.  Does anyone know of a relocation kit that would put it near the instruments, with a wire harness extension and bracket?  I see such kits advertised for Kawasaki Vulcans, but not for the Valk.

Thanks.

Never heard of one.  Considering the population of our fine ladies, I doubt if any manufacturer of such devices would be interested.

Agreed.  It would be something you would have to make yourself, I believe.  Can't be that difficult in respect to the wiring, just have to build a 4 wire extension with two 4 prong (1 male, 1 female) connectors.   Mounting the switch could be a challenge.  Seems doable.

I would wait a while before doing that. I think you will find you get used to the ignition position pretty quick.

I can't get used to not seeing my key while riding (and the tire pressure monitor hanging on my keyring) ... and I wouldn't be a good mechanical engineer if I didn't want to modify my environment to suit my needs  Smiley

I think acquiring the connectors may be the harder part. For a mount, you just need to fab a bracket, perhaps of polished stainless, with captive nuts to accept part #10:

Over the years there have been a number of rather unnecessary and useless mods attempted on the Valkyrie, most have been proven to be of little value. I'm with the earlier post re. "seeing" the key....if the bike is running, the assumption can be made that the key is on. The only "mod" of real value re. bike keys, or any other vehicle key, is to modify what you have on that key ring. Reduce it to just the ignition key if possible so as to not wear down the tumblers inside, caused by the excess weight banging around in the wind. I learned that from my first flight instructor when I was suddenly flying a glider because the excess wear on the ignition switch from all my keys caused the switch to turn just enough to cut it off. The silence was deafening.

Keep in mind, if you move the ignition sw. up near the neck of the bike, it becomes easier for someone to hot wire it.

Funny the 1800c has the key on top and I can't get used to it..    For the 1500 I'm just glad the key is on the right. Isn't the Rune on the left? I know it is stupid but on the left would be awkward, like the first time when I was a punk kid that I traded rides for a couple laps around the field, my 125 Yamaha with a guy who had a 125 full taco
(Bultaco) and tried to start the freaking thing.   Like using a computer mouse for the first time.   2funny

I'm also one of those ones it just prefers to have one key and nothing else

Not always, a member here this past September lost his key while riding on the DRU. It is possible that the ignition fails and let's the key come out while in the on position.

All the more reason to not have anything hanging from your key. Shocked

Pretty sure he said it was just a single key with nothing on it.

look at vintageconnections.com to see if they have the correct connector.  I have built harness extensions for my audio install and they carried the correct connectors so I did not have to cut into my main harness,
you can also try http://www.cycleterminal.com/index.html

Due to weather conditions etc. I like the stock position best. I do believe Honda has this location down pat compared to neck location that other manufactures seem to keep doing but I've been riding Hondas for 43 yrs. Just a normal location for me.
