This was a local motorcycle accident just a few miles from home.
There's been quite an uproar from local riders.

Driver accused of painting nails in fatal crash pleads not guilty

A woman accused of killing a motorcyclist because she was painting her nails while driving pleaded not guilty today in Lake County Circuit Court.

Lora L. Hunt, 48, faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison if convicted but would also be eligible for probation.

Hunt's vehicle struck and killed Anita Zafke, 56, of Lake Zurich, on May 2 after Zafke stopped for a traffic signal at Rand and Old McHenry roads near Lake Zurich.

The crash has sparked an emotional outcry from motorcyclists about the dangers of distracted driving, and about 25 motorcyclists were in Circuit Judge Fred Foreman's courtroom for the arraignment.

Hunt's attorney, Jeffrey Tomczak, said his client has had an emotional reaction to the tragedy as well.

"In my 25 years of practice, I have never met a person who has suffered worse than Lora Hunt," Tomczak said. "She is truly sorry, very remorseful and prays everyday for the victim and her family."

Police said Hunt, of Morris, was applying nail polish as she drove at about 50 mph toward the intersection where Zafke was struck, and that nail polish was splattered on the interior of the car.

Toxicology tests revealed drugs or alcohol did not play a role in the crash; drugs or alcohol are factors in nearly all cases where reckless homicide is charged.

Assistant State's Attorney Michael Mermel said the charges were appropriate because Hunt's painting of her nails while driving went beyond a temporary distraction into conscious recklessness.

Tomczak said he was unaware of any other cases where reckless homicide has been charged in circumstances similar to Hunt's case.

Hunt, who is free after posting $10,000 for bond, is due to appear in court Nov. 30.

If Anita Zafke was your mom/sister/wife/daugher, would you let Hunt walk?  She killed someone because she was  self-centered, rather than drunk, but Zafke is just as dead.

Oh that poor Laura Hunt,.....all that nail polish splattered all over the interior of her car.
It's a BITCH to clean once it has dried.

It's a shame. I know it happens in everyones part of the country. But, Anita Z. was catapulted over a 150'. Clear across a 4-lane divided highway.

Mr. Idiot Tomczak, meet the Zafke family.

I would have to say NO. She will probably not do any time. Most likely probation. There was a crash here a few years ago. A motorcyclist was hit and killed north of Ft Wayne. He was sitting at a light at 2AM when a 16 year old Girl talking on her cel phone hit him. He was thrown over a hundred feet. His bike was stuck upright in the front of her car. My buddy Scott was dispatched to that crash. The girls mother was there and wanted to know what her daughter did wrong. Scott pointed to the sheet on the road with the bikers body under and said "she killed a man because she was talking on her phone". The mother had nothing more to say. As far as I know she never was charged.
I was talking about this to a co worker a few days later. She said "what was that guy doing out a 2AM". Like it was his fault........

I hope she gets the 5 years.  It is time to send a message that this is NOT tolerated.  But, even if she gets time, I really doubt if she serves any time, or not over a few months.

I hope she is tore up by it.  She should be.  AND she  needs jail time to think about it some more!

They should fry her ass.  Most of the murderers around here get off with a traffic ticket for failure to yeild.....that's it.

There ought to be a law......kill a motorcyclist, go to jail.
