...we headed up deep into the Upper Peninsula yesterday.....destination Pictured Rocks..

.....was a nice ride up I75 to the Mighty Mack....fall colors were in "almost"...full bloom along the way..

....we  live only a short 94 miles from the Mackinaw Bridge...and before long we were passing through the gates to the beautiful and mystical Upper Peninsula..

.....first stop on our journey...Point Iroquois Lighthouse....right on Lake Superior Bay

....lil history on Point Iroquois and the light house...

. ...this is the first light house since Ive been here, that lets you go up to the top...for free....so up we went...

. . ...it was a steep climb...but once we got to the top...it was definitely worth the climb....fall colors were spectacular from up there...

....had to let the little ones have a look see across the huge....Lake Superior...the largest of the Great Lakes...

. ....and there were some cool sites to see for sure...like this ship...the work horse of the Great Lakes...Lake Superior is the lake that swallowed up the Edmund Fitzgerald...which wasnt located until years later...speculations still swirls about...why..exactly, did the ship sink...it looked almost identical to this one...

....next destination on our adventure...Pictured Rocks...this park is spectacular..its about 150 miles North of the bridge...deep into the UP..and is the destination of many toursit across the state and indeed the globe...evident by the many out of state license plates we saw in the parking lot...even in the "off season"..

. ....last time Chili and I were here..about two years ago,,,it was mid summer and a beautiful hot day...the water was so clear it looked almost tropical...a small boat had docked down at the bottom and young people were diving in and swimming around with their labrador retriver....kyakers could be seen slowly exploring the shore line.......there were no swimmers or kyakers this day....last time while standing there taking pictures....suddenly...a golden eagle came slowly gliding by...beneath us...he had a wing span close to 8 feet....I had just bought this camera...and as I fumbled with it..trying to get it turned on and focused...he silently glided...out of site..

....looking down on.."Miners Castle"...there used to be a rock bridge there, but half of it collapsed long ago..

....next we walked around...and took the path down through the woods and right up to the top of Miners Castle...

. . ...a little "History"....on Miners Castle..

. ...this is just a ...little taste...of some of the beauty that makes up the Upper Peninsula....if you have the time..Chili and I highly recommend that you go explore some of the treasures...hidden there..

the family and I spent 18 years going Indian River camping for two weeks at a time at the jellystone camp ground out 68 east just before you get Afton. love that part of Mi.  and the UP is just as good.
the one thing that we are going to to have maybe more than once is a pastie I think I spelled it right and i dont think anyone sells them in lower part of Mi. So that means that I and who ever else will be making at least one or two trips to St Ignace. cant rember the name of the place it sat just of I75 on the right just you start the left hand turn going down into town.
can't wait to get back up in the North Country.

You bet - only about 1 1/2 hours tops, from where we're at.

Another place to go, Tahquanomen Falls (sp?) about 45 miles from the Big Mac in the UP.

Lots of smaller falls near Munising too.
