Author Topic: Install I/S fuel tank on standard  (Read 996 times)

I've purchased an I/S fuel tank and want to install it on my 2001 standard.  What are the potential problems? Besides the seat being snug against the tank? The tank has the fuel sending unit still installed, what do I have to do to hook up a fuel gauge? Where can I get one?

If you have the sending unit, then other than being bigger, it should bolt right up. Look forward to going 180 miles to reserve.  cooldude

As for the gauge, it would be best to search for the posts on it. I'll look and edit this if I find it.

Also, didn't mention first, but why even bother? I like the IS models, but I base my riding more on how far I can drive to reserve, than how much the gauge says I have fuel left.

Tim Skelton Valkyrie Pages was a web site that had a very nice description and pictures of swapping gas tanks, but it is gone.  (Last time I said this, someone found it saved somewhere else on line.)

I believe it was John Schmidt who pointed out that running an aftermarket gauge to an IS sending unit, you needed to reverse the wires from what the aftermarket gauge instructions say.  Some Honda thing.  

On both my interstates (IS), filling the tanks to the very top (meaning sitting on them centered up at the gas pump, never on the stand, and slow feed the last half gallon right up to the neck), I have gotten an average of 220mi to reserve on average for many years.

I think this may be the gauge used by a few.  It is programmable .. I changed to the IS tank many years ago .  I did not install the gauge though.  The wife and I ride fairly hard so my valk is pretty consistent at 180 miles on the main

I've got to admit, I've become pretty lazy since riding my I/S. With my standard I always reset the trip meter on fill ups. Now I just check my gauge.  Embarrassed

I am in the process of doing the same. I just ordered Speedhut's fuel level and voltmeter gauges primarily due to the ability to completely customize the  gauges. You can pick the bezel type and finish, color of the face and back lighting, pointer color and few other things. You can also have them add a rubber gasket and silicone around the face for water resistance and can include low fuel warning light. Additionally, I requested a dimmer option to ensure a proper level of illumination.  Smiley 

Right at $100 for fuel level gauge plus shipping. Cannot attest to quality yet, but they indicated a lifetime warranty. Downside: it is custom, so takes a few weeks.   Sad

Again no experience with the product but talking to the tech he indicated the programmability of the unit can work with the reverse polarity of the Valk's sending unit.

Since I have a Harley batwing inner and outer fairing on my tourer, Speedhut's threaded spin ring to tighten the gauges to fairing is a definite plus. Probably not a issue for Banjoman, but maybe. I could not determine how to its done with the Autometer.

Thanks for the info. I put a Speedhut GPS speedo on my Valk, it works great.

This is the one I used when putting a I/S tank on my wife's Valk trike. Easy to "program" and pretty accurate.
