Partzilla.com knows...

Grind down to the 1500 starter page, click on the part number,
and all the models it will fit will show up.

Valkyrie starters only fit Valkyries...

I had to get a starter once... starters never break (I broke mine,
it didn't break  Roll Eyes ) so I looked on Pinwall and found one
from a relatively low mileage bike that wasn't rusty, for cheap.

Don't polish your starter, BTW, it's not aluminum. I  polished
off my old starter's paint, and it rusted, blegghh...

Starters go SPROING when you take them apart, too...

The hot wire on a starter is locked down to its stud with
doubled low profile nuts. Get or make an actual low profile
wrench to hold down the bottom nut if you remove it, or
you might be sorry... the insides wring off pretty easy, and
the plastic thing inside that gets wrung off is about the only
thing inside a starter that isn't on the parts fiche...

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

If yours is bad it can be rebuilt by any starter/alt guy. I have my gone threw every 50k miles. He did it last week and put in new brush/assembly and a bearing. $72

My starter is peachy right now!  cooldude Its just that I have a 2000 GW starter from a few years ago. No point in selling it if I can use it or its gubbins at a later stage for my Valk.

Heck, you have it in hand. Why don't you just go out and compare it to the one on your engine, if it is identical looking, it will work. Same engine = same starter.

I'm thinking they ARE interchangeable. Just not identical. The GW starter is also the reverse motor, so I would expect it to be able to handle a power load for longer than to just start a bike up.

The GL1500 is still basically the same motor.

Like Ricky-D said, just try it.

With out seeing them side by side my guess would be a possible difference in the pinion gear or pinion depth.
Would think the mounting points would be the same.

Here's a 1500 wing starter:

Here's a Valkyrie starter:

The Valkyrie starter, BTW, is on ebay now... it says from a 9k bike and it is
buy-it-now for $35...

I wonder if that funny gear on the wing starter has to do with going backwards?

Thats why I asked if the armature could be used. Part numbers for the individual pieces are not listed. Without taking them apart one wouldnt know. Does not look like they would be the same length even if the gear could be pulled. Heck I'll just sell it and buy one in if I ever need one for the Valk.

Thanks guys

I read that the Valkyries made for Japan had reverse?
Maybe they used a GW starter?

Not all Goldwings came with reverse. The starter pictured that shows the gear on the shaft is for an electric reverse Goldwing, however, that gear on the starter will not keep it from working in a 1500 engine that has no reverse.
